    Default Could you burn this?

Well, I ran into a young fella at the local hire shop, got to talkin and he asks "Are Eucalypts any good?" I'm thinking are 'Eucs any good!' Geese!!

He goes on to say they have just put down a few tree's over the weekend and says they are just thinking of burning it. So I get a phone number and have a chat with his father, then I convince the boss to come out with me for a bit of a drive to take a look

    This is the pile...

    and the other side...

Well the Father (a guy by the name of Gary, pretty decent fellow) says, if I want anything from it, we're welcome to it and if I want to I can cut it up there and throw the trim cuts back on his waste pile. So I look into getting something out there to have a look at the pile to see what is useful...

So any of you would burn this pile?

As a turner, I'm quite sure I'd manage to convince myself there are several trailer loads that must find a new home behind my shed. Not that I have the room for it, but since when has that made any difference?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Here's a teaser of what we managed to rescue from the pile...

What do you think? the one in the middle (a bit hard to tell without anything for scale) is 600mm diameter

Anyone out there wanna burn this one???

Same here, often see mounds of macrocarpra logs twice the size of a house burnt.

That's why I'm building a new mill, nearly finished, maybe even today if I extract the digit.

The jarrah I cut down south for a farmer a few weeks ago was destined to be burnt until my dad who is his neighbour convinced him to let me mill it. He is a convert now that he scored a heap of jarrah for his shearing shed extension for far less than half it's retail cost.

I am yet to get into that pile I found see this thread, maybe tomorrow. But they were destined for the same fate

Well I did a bit of ringing around of different machinery guys, eventually after a bit of frustration, Wifey made a suggestion and I got onto a mate who operates a Backhoe, he seemed to be very confident on the phone as to how easy it'd be to get some logs out of the pile of rubbish.

Here's what we managed in the first hour...

As a frame of reference, the second log from left is 600mm dia. on the face toward the camera and 6m long.

Here's Dave and his backhoe moving a log which was just shy of 2 cubic metres...

He moved 'em around so easy and I thought I'd need a 16 ton ecky with a grab as a minimum...

So this is the first pile at the end of the day...

Admittedly some have a bit of branch or might only be 2 m long, there's one which had a rough split from being pushed into the pile, I might have to dock more out of it, we'll see.

and another view of the first pile, just as Dave is leaving...

    Here's the second pile...

and a look at the ends of the logs...

This second pile is 20 logs, the first is 24, so conservatively I'd say there is 44 cube, although I picked out a nice big log to measure (it tapered 50mm over 8.6 m!) and it was 1.8 cube, so it may be much higher, but some of them are a bit short. I decided when I set up to mill them I'd go around and calculate the whole lot.

All up we spent about 5 hours on site, with me running around with the sniggin chain and Harry the chainsaw, Dave would set up a few root balls to cut so I could give Harry a run while he dug out the next addition to the 'keep' pile, then he'd beep the horn and I'd run over with the chain, hook up the next 'keeper' and Dave would take it to the join the others, I'd jog over to remove the chain, then get back to running Harry while Dave went to rescue the next 'almost fire victim'

It has cost me $500 for Dave and his wonderful machine and almost 5 litres of fuel in Harry and maybe around 1 litre of chain oil, plus a day of my time - although we where only there until about 1300, I knocked off for the day absolutely stuffed, my tired arms didn't want to take my shirt off by the time I got home...

So anyone wanna burn em? or ya wanna see what I will get out of my days time and $500 for Dave?

I have to just about mortgage the house to buy jarrah, and he uses it for a shearing shed!!!!

Yeah Bob, I think this pile is destined for our Alpaca Paddock shelters mate, weatherboards, 6"x6" posts, 6"x1" boards for rough sawn plantation shutters... I was thinking of making them 3 sided, but the side opposite the gate would be a wall of these shutters so we could let the breeze through, but still give 'em shade??

    Dunno yet...
