Default chain sawyers and fellers show us your oils

Just wanting to know whos using what and why ? With my new saws I ve been using the oils the dealer gave me. But when they run out I d like some pointers
I know stihl oils are castrol based not sure about husky oils. How important are your fuel ratios ? The branded oils are bloody dear ssurely there are some generics out there that are more then capable.

Bruce, try fiddling with your fuel ratios a bit.... I'm sure you'll find it's not important at all

Personally, I only use Husky two stroke oil and XP not HP either. I am not prepared to 'play' with a $2,000 saw or compromise its longevity by penny pinching - it gets serviced when due, plug and air filter as specified, sprocket, bar etc. all I can do to make the saw last as long as possible is done, that just make sense to me. People I know don't even use chain oil, but I get 20l for $90 and it's designed for a purpose. I'm pretty much stuffed if the saw doesn't work, so it gets treated right

A few years ago I was paying $3.00 a litre for bar oil, supply your own container from a local lawnmower/chainsaw repairer. He stuffed me around with my lawnmower and refused to look further into a problem which I fixed and turned out to be a faulty electronic ignition unit which he supplied and fitted so I refuse to go back to him. Normal price most other places is $30 to $40 per 4 litres. I just bought 4 litres for $20 of echo bar oil so the only option is to keep looking for the best price.

Like Father like Son, Dad always used True Blue Cos they used to make the Stihl 2 Stroke oil and that's just what I have kept doing ( last purchase was 16lt $90 $5.635 P/Lt )
As for bar oil *that horse has been flogged back to life* Cheap motor oil *coles *supercheap ect. can sometimes get it for as low a $2 per litre. But at the last wheel and deal I have been offered a 44 gal of 1000hrs old hydraulic oil for a $1 a litre will shandy it with a cheap 20lt of tacky bar oil and my regular cheap motor oil and see how it goes.

    Cheers Rob

I have a Stihl and only use their fuel and bar oils. It certainly helped me when the seller through in 5ltrs of fuel oil and 20ltrs of chain oil with the saw for free

It's been discussed before. No home filtering of sump oil will remove the dissolved Cr and other nasties which are carcinogenic and not nice environmentally.

As far a bar oil goes I use Stihl brand in the saws and canola oil in the aux oiler. I buy the canola in 4 litre plastic bottles from coles when it is on special at just under $3/L

I can understand someone who is a weekend user of a chainsaw around the house wanting to find a little cheaper alternative - someone who doesn't rely on their chainsaw for a living, but seriously the saw uses the oil while its running, while it's running the saw is making you money, the longer it runs the longer you make money.....
personally I cannot understand any other rationale that involves going through bars, chains sprockets quicker, thus making the saw work harder thus decreasing it's life ???

castrol powerTTS full synthetic 2 stroke oil and caltex bar oil. Have found it really good bar oil and have tried everything else there is to offer It is cheap clean and GOOD forget the 35 dollar for 4 litre stuff this is as good or better and is $4 a litre in 1 litre bottles and considerably cheaper in bigger quantities. Far better than the gulf western rubbish! and cheaper than the cheapest motor oil at super cheap (not that I would use that anyway!)

for the amount of oil you mix with your fuel bruce do NOT muck around with oil mixtures! 50 to 1 is what most manufacturers recommend nowdays.
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

I don't understand even the HO wanting to try to cheap out lets face it for about a dollars worth of fuel and roughly the same of oil to cut about a tonne of wood why the hell would ya??
