    Default Chain for Stihl 090G

    Hello All,

I happened to find this old STIHL 090G chainsaw in our old stockroom a few months back. The motor runs fine, but its old chain was in bad shape. Im planning to get a new one with the hope of putting this old saw to good use again.

The problem is, I know absolutely know nothing about chainsaws. I bought an Oregon chain(see photo) which I thought would fit, but when I tested it, the chain didn't bite the sprocket properly and just resulted in the chain getting too tight around the guidebar when I would run it.

Any idea where I can find a chain for this unit? Any help would be appreciated.

    Miko

Welcome to the forum. That chainsaw is a nice find.

When using a new chain (Especially on that saw) it is normal for the chain to stretch a lot in the first few uses, certainly enough for it to become very loose. So all you may need to do is keep tightening the chain for a while.
Remember you have to tighten the bar bolts up quite tight, tighter than you think but not too tight or you will strip out the aluminium threads in the body of the saw.

The type of chain it uses should be stamped on the bar - I cannot see it in the photo you posted of the end of the bar so maybe look on the other side.

The chain link you showed a picture of is an Oregon 59 chain which is usually 0.063" bar groove with and has a pitch of 0.404" - this sounds right for this saw.

What is the condition of the drive sprocket - you may need to replace it - it should be replaced every time the chain is replaced - post a picture of it so we can see the top of the drive teeth joe take the chain off

Be careful with that chainsaw - its a brute of a saw but sure is nice to use.

    Hello

Here is what i found on the guide bar:

    STIHL 73

    300 2 000 9252

What happened during testing was two chain teeth were squeezing into a single sprocket gap. This resulted to the chain being super tight on the bar, eventually stalling the motor if you gave it gas.

Would you know where I could get a chain and sprocket online?

It would not surprise me if your 090G has a 1/2" pitch sprocket fitted.
    According to this site.
    http://www.acresinternet.com/cscc.ns...2?OpenDocument
.404 was an option on 090G's which would be logical given the saw's intended usage.
Possibly a .404 sprocket may get you out of trouble. Try ebay for one.
Did you realise that 090G's are only 106CC whereas the straight 090 is 137CC?

Be easy to pop the sprocket off and get the number. Use the number to find out what you are dealing with.

    OR

Purchase a sprocket of your choosing, then purchase a bar and chain.

As far as Bailey's....good luck. Their idea of customer service has been lacking(they are going to back order anything you order)....

Scott (I would pick any other vendor) B

I am still shipping Internationally for now.

I haven't bought anything from them for a year or so but my experience with Bailey's has been all good.
Maybe its because Aussies assume all service will be poor?

Sad to say, but I would echo the earlier post regarding Baileys.
Most things are back ordered and freight is astronomical.
    Go elsewhere. I have.

Rather than just say "go elsewhere", it would be more helpful to suggest "where"?

I did suggest Ebay as a source in an earlier post. I also use Randys Engine Repair from time to time. Gregg, the well known Bailey's employee known as Grande Dogg on the arboristsite forum has gone out on his own now and his website is www.leftcoastsupplies.com
I was a long term Baileys customer, but their freight pricing is unbelievable now and they have developed the ability to stuff up an order like no one else I have ever known. It took Gregg to beat them around the head several times with a blunt object before we got my last order sorted.
