Some other cutting Al's been doin...
So in the vein of catching up on showing you guys some of the stuff I've been doin recently, here's some pics you've missed out on up 'til now...
So this was a contract cutting gig I did working 40hrs a week around the time of our Qld floods. They had two other 8-30's running full time also, those mills had sheds and a full time tailer - little old me had the open air spot and had to deal with the most demanding tailer a sawyer could ever have to deal with - me
In this instance I was asked to cut a whack of 10x10's out of good old Ironbark, here's one of the logs in the mill all lined up and quaking in it's bark...
The 10x10 all but sawn out of the log...
I like to get to this stage on a big board like a 10x10, then raise the rails back up to the top of the gauges so I can run back over the log and shave off any humping the log has done through the middle - if I don't do this the board ends up being much thicker in the middle than the two ends. You can see here how much was taken off the middle of the post, almost 12mm in this instance and nothing off each end.
I reckon it just gives a much better product once I'm finished...
Then if the sawyer has done their job properly the post should be nice and straight as well as nice and regular in dimension along its entire lengthI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
Allan.

Nice work Al,
I spent today machining iron bark decking. The moulder gets louder and louder as the cutters get dull. It was kiln dried so really hard. How do you find the saws on the lucas when cutting it. Do you have to sharpen more often? I reckon that will be a "yes".
cheers
Steve

Well the forest industry hardly uses TCT chain, its more for fire and rescue boys, so thats not really a problem - find it hard to think it'd need two chains to get a billet from a tree with charred bark
Thanks mate
oh crud... yeah you're right - must have forgotten what machine I haveI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Steve it's not as bad as you'd think, I find the crud caught in the bark of ironbark to be more of a challenge to the blade than the timber cutting. The bark gives a bit of grief - tends to 'fur up' above the blade in the horizontal and cause it to drive toward the end of the log. My solution is to do something akin to a scoring cut the full length of the log, only about 2' in, then put the blade to the position you want to for the horizontal cut and no problems.
The 10" seems to cut better with harder timber, the finish it leaves in such dense timber is magicI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
