Cutting Thin Boards from Hoop Pine.
My neighbour needed some 6m long 200mm wide and about 12 to 15mm thick boards for bending. He had a Hoop Pine that needed cutting so when the tree was cut, it was sawn immediately on his Lucas Mill. Because Hoop Pine is so stable, there was no difficulty in cutting these thin boards.
I suspect though that he will not be able to bend the wood as required as the wood was knotty and it will break on the knots. He will then have to ask me for one of my pruned Hoop Pine for his project. The question I'm now asking myself ahead of schedule is, how big will the tree need to be for a 200mm wide knot free board remembering the 6inch knotty core and making allowances for my possible slackness all those years ago? Um.

Will your neighbour bend the hoop pine now while it is still green or after he has air-dried it for some time ?
The knotty boards may bend while still green

Ian,
He will bend it almost straight away. Looking at it today, at least one of the boards is quite good so it is likely he will not have to ask me for one of my pruned trees.
Thanks for the formula. Allowances also need to be made for a variety of errors that might come in.
