Cyclone Yasi Logging

Thanks to all the advice and suggestions from many people here plus locals around my parts, plus innumerable phone calls, this project is a goer.

I won't name any name in case I miss someone, but would like to say I have really appreciated you all putting up with my (sometimes dumb) questions and steering me in the right way. See Threads "Snigging Logs with tractor" and "How big is my problem"

This last weekend 2 blokes plus myself started preparing logs for recovery. we spent 2 days of about 6 hours actual work cutting off butts and tops and have about 40 logs of various species ready to pull out.

This morning (Monday) the first smallish Black Wattles close to the house came out. Got 8 of these out so far. Used a high tensile 10mm chain on the rippers of a Fiat Dozer. With the ripper we were able to lift the front of the log and they came out easy, even down a steep track

It's only a small Dozer but the bloke (he's done quite a bit of work for me) is an exceptional operator.

Here are some pics of the first Black Wattle Logs about 4m long arriving at one of the future milling sites
I reckon these will make some nice slabs in due course.

ok that does it. I am moving to FNQ. You blokes get all the good stuff. Even with the help of cyclones and floods. No honestly well done in what you are doing. Hope all goes well for you all.

Not totally sure but I think it's an 8 B or a 10.
The bloke is back next Wednesday I'll ask him.

only reason i ask is we have fiats 451C , 50ci , 75C and an AD10 and a 480 wheel tractor. great machines

Gees...... that sounds more like an incurable habit than a bunch of machinery LOL

Seriously though they are a good and perhaps little understood thing, there are a few other Fiat crawlers around here too.
I've got a Fiat 80 66DTS 4wd tractor and it's a great machine. There are quite a few of them around here being mostly Italian cane and banana Farmers here.

New Holland to this day build this machine as a no frills no electronics tractor. Identical except a blue plastic bonnet instead of a orange steel one. Not bad considering it goes back to an 80's or even earlier design.

Out of curiosity are all yours running/working?

On the subject of small dozers i did some work for a guy who had an old 40HP Fiat dozer and a brand new 95 HP John Dere FWA style tractor.

He told me that out of curiosity he had a tug of war between the two. The Fiat in top gear towed the John Dere in low gear backwards. No contest!

Had the use of a small excavator with log grab yesterday, so took the opportunity to clean up access for the dozer for the big logs as well as pull out some of the smaller ones. These are the ones in pic CL_6 and are mostly fence rail type stuff, might yet get something out of some of them.

We've got about 25 larger logs ready to pull out when the dozer bloke gets back on Wednesday.

Here are some pics of some of them, have yet to positively ID quite a few
