    Default The devils timber, Wandoo

Was given a little job this morning to cut up some Wandoo for a customer into 100x75 posts for his landscape garden. This stuff is rock hard but oh so pretty. I have had sparks coming off blades when cutting wandoo in the past but this one wasnt quite that bad It can range from deep reds to browns but this one had a bit of both so I took some pics.

    Some information on Wandoo:

    GD 1280kg/m3
    ADD 1100kg/m3
Most durable eucalypt of western australia
Wood contains 10% tanin, bark contains 20% tanin (useful in leather industry)
Minimal corrosion when in contact with steel fixings.
S2, SD2 (Pretty strong in other words)

I'd like to tell you that I ssprouted all this of the top of my head, but I can't and I didn't.

I looked it up because I knew nothing about it.

    Looks fantastic nifty

I used second hand wandoo floor boards on the floor of our attic. It only cost me $200 for a pack to cover the 5.4 x 4.2 area and I still have about 1/4 of the pack left to play with. I took me about a day to denail it and every nail hole had to be drilled but it was worth it.

Its great lookin stuff but rock hard and tough on blades. I use a 4 degree blade with deepened gullets and take it nice and slow. Wandoo basically grows from the back hills behind Collie and out through the weatbelt and inland areas. Dont think Ive ever seen a shearing shed floor that wasnt wandoo because of its durability.

Green Wandoo cuts easily on the lucas and also splits well for firewood, but harder tho when it dries off a bit. Good looking timber tho I agree. I have a couple of decent logs to do in near future, will try to take a few pics.

Nifty I'm guessing that log was dry?

You can get lucky with wandoo. I had a job once to cut 10 wandoo logs, 6 cut up like jarrah but the other 4 were like molten rock. Look out for the real brown ones with very tight growth rings.
