Default How little things have changed!!

Got my new Stihl ms 660 magnum Thursday night, What a machine!!! Of all of the things stihl do well it is their chainsaws that they do the best in my opinion.

Any way the little fellas wanted to check out my new saw tonight so I got it out for them to have a look, (I wanted to drool a little more over it too!) So there we were all drooling and I thought, what the heck I will get the old 034 out to do a bit of a comparison between the 2. It is amazing how little stihl have changed the design in 20 years. Despite the obvious size differences, the fact that the new one is nice and shiny and a couple of minor cosmetic differences, The saws are virtually the same, in fact I reckon some of the bits would interchange between both saws. One thing in particular is the front hand guard, they are identical in almost every regard, but more than anything the general shaping/ergonomics of the two are damn close to identical, just one has been scaled up a little and had a couple of bumps added.

Anyway all that said they are both awesome saws, and I can't wait to use the new 660 in anger.

heres a few pics for all you stihl fans to drool at and for the husky users to see what a real saw looks like...lol
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

Might have to take it back yet, it is causing my cheeks to be extremely sore, cause of the BIG CHEESY GRIN I have had on my face since I got it. I just can't wipe it off.

Trust us. Husky owners already know what a real saw looks like, we own them.
Glad you are happy with your saw, there is no feeling quite like it is there.

Have you retensioned the cylinder base screws yet? meant to happen between 10 and 20 hours of operation.

Agreed they are the best all round saw you can get, I am real glad I didn't get a 460 or 441. granted it is nearly a kilo heavier but when its working I don't think it is noticeable, only when you have to carry it longer distances you might feel it. Might have to get a 25 inch hard nose for it though.

Mate I still smile every time I pick up my 19 year old 034 and hear her fire up.

I know what you mean every now and then I get the chance to get the 090 out witch is a 1973 model still starts with 2 pulls on the choke and 3 pulls without. great saws will be interesting to see if these new ones will be like that when they get to 30 + years old

Guess it shows how weel the general design was sorted in the first place and how ell it has stood the test of time.

As they say: "When you're on a good thing, stick to it!"
