    Default my new log winch

picked up a 9000lb warn winch at teh wreckers last week.

after a day of cutting and welding i have it super securely mounted under the back of the ute.

i was originally going to mount it in teh bull bar but it will be more usefull under the back where i can use it to load the trailer and winch the mill up when im buggered.

    pic 1 closeup of winch
    pic 2 location under back
pic 3 view from the end of the 35m or rope.

it retrieves at about 10m per minute with 300kg weight on the end.witch is much faster than the turfur and with a lot less work.

i may put a second battery in to make sure i have enough storage althow i will keep the engine running wile winching.

I can see the photos OK. Not a bad idea Carl. What's the pull rating? I would be getting a dedicated battery to run it - a deep cycle battery - as the regular starter battery is only designed for multiple 5% discharges while starting the car, not regular deep discharges. Also, the winch might use 100, 200, 300 amps? so a high-output alternator would be nice too, like a 100 amp.

9000lb about 4 ton or so

yer im thinking of mounting a second battery either under the tray or under the bonnet depending on space.

it would also mean that hen i spend 2 or 3 days away on a job i can run some 12 volt lights without having to worrie about the battery

Wolf that is bloody funny - maybe he still had them "FILED" away somewhere safe Ah DanG Carl that is harsh the whole file thing.

But back on track, the old winch looks pretty bloody handy, should be able to set the ute up 90 deg to the mill and get the winch to roll logs in hey?

For loading your trailer, I've seen a thing on the Forestry Forum in the US called a 'log arch' (I think) Anyway it is an 'A' frame on the trailer. The 'A' frame pivots at it's attachment points to the trailer. When you go to snig a log onto the back of the trailer, you have the log chained and attach the D shackle to the chain. The winch cable goes through... ah bugger a pic may be easier...brb....

Ok so you winch the log to the trailer, when the log gets hard against the log arch thing, keep winching, the arch pivots and brings the end of the log above the trailer deck, pay out some cable to let log come down onto the deck, then take the cable out of the arch, re-attach to chain on log and keep winching, log comes up and onto the back of the trailer, no need for a ramp to take the weight of logs, no need to unhitch ute to load the trailer from the side, depending on your arch and the rating for the trailer, could do two layers of logs??

I'd go bigger than 100 amp alternator and make it switchable from normal battery to the winch one and both when driving - if you are going to be doing some serious winching

i roll my logs up sideways

i can roll a 4 ton log on with teh 1.6 ton turfur so i should be able to roll a bloody monster with this.

all i do is put a block on teh side of teh trailer and run the rope out threw teh block around teh log then back to teh trailer.

the bloke next doors got a setup in his 4be that has 3 batteries. one to start teh engine one to run an eagle fridge and one to run the winch.

hes got auto switch things that once teh starting battery is full it switches and charges teh next one then teh next one.

im going to have a look tomorow

Sigidi, this is what I use, all home-made, but sounds the same. Works a treat for small logs up to 500kg.

Nice winch Carl, will come in very handy and save lots of time and sweat - also good for when you let others drive your car through small depressions.

Make sure you get a big old woolen blanket or canvas tarp and lay it across the cable when it is in use. Broken loaded winch cables are not as forgiving as chainsaw files if you happen to be standing in the way and you certainly won't see it coming.

Timbertalk, that is a nice jig, kind of like a rubbish skip truck lifting mechanism.

Yep, that's the kind of thingo I'm talking about TT.

Mike, too true about the winch cable and safety. Seen a few nasty pics of accidents using 'em while I was in the Army. They are hell strict on winch safety, as soon as the rope is attached at the other end, "live wire" is shouted by the attaching person and those in earshot have to repeat it. Then once it's attached, even if loose, lying on the ground, no-one is permitted to step over it, you stay on your side of the cable or you walk around the whole show, also as you mentioned a safety device is installed to the cable.

I have seen a broken cable rip open the side of a 60 series cruiser like it was tissue paper. If it is the eye hook on another vehicle beings used as a winch point that lets go it is even worse beacuse then you have a 1/2 kilo shackle attached to the flying cable come at you like a cannon ball

I've seen a person flicked up in the air , from stepping over the snigging chain between a bulldozer and a log .

Some folks just don't think .
