All over the place logs
Hi all
I have some logs (if you can call them that. More like branches) and a chain saw. I don't have a band saw and don't know anybody with a band saw on Russell Island. Some of the branches are olive and I would dearly cut them up for pen blanks. Any idea how to grip the logs/branches to cut with a chain saw? Also milling in general. I always have access to logs for milling. How would a good start be to cut 30 -50 cm logs. (These are logs) My guess would be one would need lifting gear like a block and tackle, long bladed chain saw or huge muscles and a log saw (Have good hand log saw but not the huge muscles). I think I know the answer already but just want to throw this out there to see if somebody has an inexpensive magic way of milling planks about 20-25mm thick. I also have a huge Mango trunk on my block f land I need to do something with. I have sat at it's base, climbed a ladder and looked at it from all directions. No ideas yet. I will get some pictures to show as I already know what you guys are going to ask for. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, I have about another 50 000 questions but this will suffice for now. With kind regards and may the wood chips fly

Here is my setup for small logs (max 1.2 m long x 300 mm)
EDIT ( seeing as the linked text show up so poor here is the link https://www.woodworkforums.com/f14/fi...milling-47342/)
For bigger stuff I suggest the chainsaw milling 101 sticky on the arboristsite (http://www.arboristsite.com/milling-saw-mills/)

Regarding your mango tree you might like to look at Mapleman's thread for some ideas:

Good luck .
If your "logs" are small enough you may be able to use a table saw, particularly for the likes of pen blanks, knife scales etc. It may help to cut one relatively flat face with a chainsaw first if you can. A second flate face at 90deg to that is really good (jointer is pefect if you have one or access to one.)

This is my small setup, built from scrap, but does the job, I can safely cut my turning blanks with it. this is a 62cc saw, I have the 82cc ready to try if i can kill this one. Had to freehand saw the log in half first. Can cut 400mm x 4mts.. The stack of blackwood is a testament to my cheap saw which has done hours upon hours without fault and thought I'd chuck in a pic of the new shed which is far from setup yet. the small stack is a days milling for me.
