Default Milled my first log today

Milled my first log today. Cut the Cypress tree down and hauled the 2 logs to my mill yesterday. 2 Cypress pine logs - 1 about 650-700 mm just over 7 metres and the other was 400mm and 2.7 long. Set up the Lucas mill and then went to start it and click. Dead battery. Pulled the kids buggy battery out and put it in the mill (heaps smaller!!) and woohoo off I go. I started with the smaller log to start off easy and decided on cutting 2x1's for some trim timber I need and all went well. Stopped the machine and had some lunch, came back and click, so out came the quad bike battery (heaps bigger), in it went into the mill along with a longer earth lead and a few zip ties and woohoo off I go. Finished the smaller log, set up the mill over the bigger log and off I went. I am cladding a shed with 6x1's which is 5.4 high and over the gaps between board I will put the 2x1s. Saw a pole home clad like this and it was beautiful. Anyhow I milled for the rest of the afternoon until no light. I really enjoyed milling. Finally my dream of building my own house with timber from my own block using my own two hands is starting to happen. Very happy man indeed.

Hey Marcus, was the battery/mill new? Or was the battery old/second hand? I figure something must be up with it as there has been the odd occasion I've left mine and the battery has been cool.
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Hey sigidi, the battery had died (tested as dead), but my best mate owns a battery shop so got new one today and finished milling the long log when I got home from work. Going to walk my property tomorrow morning and look for some trees to mill for the house. lots of black wattle (or so Ive been told it is) a bit of cypress, some silky oak and I don't know what the rest are. The block is quite steep so the proximity to the tracks will play a big factor. Any good reference books or sites out there for trees in North Qld, or where I'd find some more info? I figure with my block being regrowth I'd mill the wattle, and allow other trees to push through for more diversity. Plus the buggers split and fall in high wind and block the tracks around the property.

I've seen black wattle done as t&g flooring - very different and appealed to my artistic side. Maybe you could cut 4*1 to use as flooring from your wattle?

I was thinking of using the wattle as flooring, and vertical cladding boards. MAin living area I would like to be laying black bean flooring, and will drive up to Daintree (cow bay) and mill up some logs up there for it. Then the conflict- Using wattle and my house is made from on site timber, or use black bean and have the sexiest floor in the land...............Oh the conflict.
About to go walkabout and see what is going to be milled from here. Gonna dock ends, tidy up saw dust, pack mill up and move to a more sensible area on the property where I don't wake up the baby! Happy wife and baby, then your life is gravy!!
Oh and if there is anyone up FNQ, say hello, love talking and learning about timber. Or any travelling woodies up FNQ, feel free to drop in and have a look and a chat....maybe a sneaky beer or 2!!
Does anyone have experience using green timber other then fencing. I Like the idea of using my cypress cladding in about 6 weeks to clad shed. Thoughts? A neighbor did it and had decent results.
In fact I wanna start building asap and wanna use green Hwood.
Thanks for the interest Mark and opel, I will add pics as I go along.
