A milling challenge
Hope this is an appropriate use of this forum.
Here's a blue gum log that's just been pulled up from the Huon river at Franklin. It's sat on the bottom for the last 10 years awaiting a suitable use. The plan is to mill it using a Lucas mill and (possibly) a chainsaw mill as the Lucas rails are too short to handle the log in one go. It was being pressure washed when I left but I imagine that after 10 years, there's going to be a lot of muck embedded in it. I'll try and be there and take a few pictures when they start the milling.
BTW, there's another one like it still in the river.Geoff

How long is it? It doesn't seem too far out of reach for a Lucasmill.
Did someone know the log was there or did someone come across it by chance? I'm just across the river from here overlooking the water, maybe we need to have a look into underwater logging

I didn't measure it but at a guess, 7 - 8 metres long. I understand the Lucas only has a 4.5 metre rail.
The logs were placed in the river for safe keeping when the Living Boat Trust's shed was built.
Timber from these logs will be used for building a coastal ketch.Geoff

Well dropped in at the shed today and they have already started to mill the log!
A first pass with the chainsaw mill.
I've asked to be told when next they decide to start cutting but I'm not hopeful.
Bernt,, mentioned your offer and it just has to make it's way to the right person - it's a committee so could take a while.Geoff

Unless your miller has lost his extensions that came with the mill or didnt have them if he bought it second hand the mill should have 6.2m full depth rails and half depth extensions for each end (so a set of 4) this will mean that right from a 10-30 down to a 6-18 you'll be able to fit a 6m log in no problems. By the sound of it your guy is only using the 6.2m full depth rails and has no extensions, therefore can only fit 4.5m between the rails - for the cost of those small 4 extensions it would give him a lot more felxibility to his milling if he fired off an order to get them.....
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
Allan.

I thought the same thing, from the look of the documentation I have got only the model 8 and model 10 mills come with the extensions as standard. I know someone out that way with an older model 6 mill, it has steel rails so maybe those are not compatible with the aluminium extensions?
