Default Newbie to Milling - Where to find information?

    Hi all!

As the title says, im a newbie when it comes to proper timber milling. Latly ive been having some fun resawing any decent sized firewood from my mates property. He doesnt have much in the way of good sized logs, but ive been building a few decent little projects with the timber I have got off him.

I have been thinking of maybe trying to get a hold of some larger trees and attempt some basic rough chainsaw milling. Do most of you guys rely on contract work, or do you just know where to look for this timber?

Where/how do I go about getting into touch with people to get these logs from?

And as for the machinery itself. I have a Stihl MS391 - not exactly the biggest saw out there. I have heard of a guide system that you can use on the saw to maintain thickness of the cutoff material - has anyone used such a system?

I know most of the main guys on here are in big time, but how did you all get started out?

    John

I started out with a home made frame copied of another a local guy had , and used a 65cc homelitewith a 600 bar , this served me well for years . still works . mostly use a lucas 6 inch mill as its a lot easier . bobl has plans for a frame on this site . the larger pro chainsaws are a must if you wish to do a lot of slabbing ,as it really takes it out of the saws , whic usually run a little rich and with more oil . some dont agree but its worked for me , dont expect to cut 100meters a day cheers Bob

You could build yourself an alaskan style mill or look at the ones cliff posted the link to. there are several threads on building them on this forum or you could get the basic ideas from several places throughout the internet, including youtube. You tube will also give ideas on how to do it.

With a 391 you would not want more than a 24 inch alaskan as it is just not a big enough saw to run more than a 24-25 inch bar. With most alaskans you will lose about 4 inches of bar length especially if you are running a roller tip bar, so the maximum log diameter will be about 19 or 20 inches.

Another place to find information is the Granberg website, these are the manufacturers of the genuine alaskan mills and have some quite good info on their site.

As for finding timber You just need to keep your eyes open, if you see road crews knocking them over, ASK, and farmers clearing trees ask them if you can mill the larger logs in return for cleaning up the remaining rubbish into firewood and such or just if you can have them. You could also ask the council if they would let you take some of the timber that they have cut down and cleared up, many councils have a log dump somewhere that they take the larger logs to that they cut down in parks and such. this is usually how I find my wood.
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.
