    Default first payed milling job.

so i wet to do my first payed milling job.

it was a spotty that blew down over at the gap in the recent storms.

    didn't get there till 12.

the log was not docked off.

so we spent 30 mins docking the 650mm spotty off. ended up with 3 4m logs from it. it was off the ground so under the center section i put my bolsters before i cut it off and it dropped down onto them when i cut it. this saved us rolling it. we ten rolled the 2 other sections out of the way.

cut the first one up no problems got 30 4x2s outa it. then setup around the second witch we had dropped onto some saplings and rolled across. this log was on a slope will about 400mm fall over the length of the rails. i got half way threw this one and my muscles gave out i could not walk my legs and arms just cramped up.

so i with a lot of effort i loaded the power head and went home leaving the rest of the mill on the job.

when i got home i jumped in the pool and cooled off. when i got out i checked the temperature it was 35 in the house. its still 33 now.

i drank 6l of watter wile i was there and i am 5kg lighter than i was this morning.

never again an i going to push myself like that.

i will be going back on Sunday to finish the job.

Take it easy Weisy, pushing yourself past your body limits is asking for trouble.

Good to see you getting paid though, didn't you have an assistant?

Carl, if your thirsty you are already dehydrated. When it's hot I have a drink after every slab whether I need to or not. Then of course you have to pee more often but that's good for you too!

Carl, why are you cutting it into 2 x 4s
is "Spotty" only good for fence posts?

I would think that 2 x 10s or thereabouts would be a better size

    how is a 4x2 a fence post? a 4x4 would be.

spotty is no good in the ground.

    what use is a 10x2?

and how is the tailer supposed to move them around?

and how am i going to cut them with a 8" lucas well i gues i could double cut but thats a lot of extra work.

he is going to advertise the bits of wood in the paper latter so he wanted a common size 4x2 is used for construction and fencing rails and other things like that.

    he also wants some 6 or 8 x 1 1/2 for a table top.

40º is way too hot to be milling. As long as there is a breeze and it's reasonably dry I'll usually keep going until it reaches ~ 35º. But if it's humid and still, I'll quit even if it's only 28º.

4 x 2 just seems so much like construction timber that I wondered why you were not cutting the logs into something bigger
    I see that your customer wamts a bit cut 6 or 8 x 1½

also you asked the other day about prefered sizes to mill and I recall some preference for 6 or 8 by 1½

yes aparentyl 1 1/2 can be planed down to 1" and used as table tops where as you have to plane down 1" stock to 19mm and its to small to use as table tops and 2" is a lot of timber to remove to get down to one inch.

CAN'T agree more, I once pushed myself almost too far in the Japoon rainforest, Jan 07 overheated, heart rate to 135, dizzy, layed down under truck, got hotter then slow drive to liverpool creek and got in, it took a long time for HR to go back to normal at 55 resting, then packed up and went home I never did that again.

WIESY you only get once chance to have a good life, go slower and go longer.

Remember heat boils water, you are 70% water

I know what you mean about the heat and dehydration thing.

We dont quite have that sort of heat here, but a 30C summer day makes it hard work. Guzzle that water. I like to take watered down fruit juice, helps the thirst and gives you a bit of sugar. Straight juice is too much, try 25% juice with cold water. I freeze 2l bottles of water, then pour juice in them as they melt.

An early start and knock of at midday is also good plan. I know 6am is just crazy, but if you put in 6 hours then knock off when it gets really hot you achieve a lot more.

That sports water is good stuff if you really need hydration. You can get powdered Gatoraid to add to your own water. If you loose salts you can't keep the water in your body anyway....I think that's the theory.
