    Default Perth chainsaw milling GTG

Because this is hidden in another thread I thought I would start a specific thread about this.

The Date is 13 October. Contact Gavin (Cow) via PM for the address.

Cow will provide a couple of logs and I will demo a few things like how to setup and start a log, I'll make a few cuts with an alaskan and maybe fire up the minimill an demo some vertical cuts are made.

The rest I'll keep flexible, maybe demo some sharpening etc.
If you want to know something specific just let me know and if required I will bring along any gear associated with that.

You will need some PPE, (ear muffs, eye protection and chaps if you have them) if want to try doing some cutting.

    Cheers
    BobL

    Hi Willy,

You'll be more than welcome. I think we're all going to be watching and learning. As Bob says, I've got a couple of logs we can practice on. I've not done it before and it's great to have Bob come start me off on the right foot. Anyone else is welcome to come along.

    Cheers
    Gavin

    Bob

I'd love to come along, but alas, a tad too far away.

I'm sure it will be a good day and well worth the trip for anybody a little nearer than me . A gathering of like minded people: What could be better ?

Sounds like a good oportunity for a chin wag, can you give us a suburb so I can see how far away it is before I pm for an address if I can fit it in?

Hi Willy, depending on how this goes I am thinking of offering to run one of these gatherings next year for my woodworking club. I'll also post it here.

    Cheers

    Hi All,

First a huge thankyou to Bob for his time and effort to give us a great start on the road to chainsaw milling. Bob brought all his gear and set it up for our benefit. He worked really hard to set up, show us the his milling equipment demonstrate it, give us a go and give us the benefit of his wealth of knowledge on all aspect of wood, equipment and techniques. I learned so much.

Thanks to Frank, Ben and Kai for making the trip.

You mean PPE I assume. What is the specific unprotected hazard you have identified? We are not swinging chainsaws around as you would be in felling or chopping. The blade is completely secured in the log and in no danger of jumping violently. Bob started and finished all cuts. You can see Bob's PPE is more than reasonable and the only time anyone else operated the saw was when it was under full control in the log get a feel for the operation. All are wearing eye protection and ear defenders. The saw is even modified to direct the sawdust away from the operator not that anyone has lost a foot from a boot full of chips.

    What is missing, tinfoil hat?
