Default Pics of apple box milled

I had a call from one of my customers recently to go and cut up a large Apple Box tree that had fallen off the top of a creek bank and down in to the creek bed, a bit of the trunk and most of the head of the tree were lying against the side of the bank so I had to go over the side with rope & cable and cut sections then hoist them up using my 4wd. That left the main part of the trunk down in the creek bed which I got permission to slab, So I thought I'd post a few pics of it. Access was not too good as the sides of the creek were fairly steep.

I used a GB 66" CS mill with 60" roller nose bar on an 880 Stihl running both 3 & 5 skip 404 Carlton SC chain. The first section of the log measured 2.8 mt long and up to 900 wide, Slabs cut from the second section were 3.6 mtr x up to 1.37mtr at the butt end.

One thing fairly interesting was the difference between 3 & 5 skip in cutting speed, The 3 skip took 26 min to go through the 3.6 mtr section and the 5 skip took 19 minutes.

I have ended up with 8 good slabs so far, heavy rain and water flowing in the creek put a stop to milling for a while.

A bit of info as well, I have partially completed a web site, So have a bit of info on saw chain , bars & accessories on there as well as a specials list.

Chain and most imported gear is set to increase by quite a large margin in the new year as goods are now costing over 40% more to import due to the drop in the the Oz dollar.
Two of my suppliers are very non commital as to how much the increases will be, other than to say that there will be major changes. If you need chain or accessories do not leave it too long before you purchase or you may find prices up by as much as 50% in the new year.

    Love the timber
I hear you with the access and log position, I completed a large silver quondong that fell/blew over in cyclone larry on a friends farm in Milla milla FNQ it was laying partly in the beatrice river on a horible angle at took forever to get milled.

Great looking stuff Laurie. I love the colour of that stuff, too bad about the rain!

I used the 60" bar on my mill I bought from you for the first time on my yesterday - will post a thread soon.

That 5 skip chain definitely looks like the way to.

    Cheers
