In SprayTech's post about his home built bandsaw he has a link to a place selling saw stuff, they have a couple of nice little 12v gear motors, something like that might be the go, not sure if they are positional tho, interesting tho

I gather you guys are talking about the mechanism that raises/lowers the rails????
I'm thinking that this task is easier than the pushing/pulling of the carriage. For instance, once the rail height is set, the carriage then has to be pushed/pulled many times along the rails before the next rail adjustment is needed.
So........many years ago I fitted a powered carriage using a 12V geared motor. Now, while the saw is doing the next cut I can be stacking the previous sawn piece.
Legality (OH&S) ?????
It has worked well for about 10 yrs now but I am not a really serious miller.
Rgds.

Bill, I am starting to get some shoulder issues and can only point to raising the rails, but not having any leg issues from walking back and forth, hence why I'm looking at motoring the winders. but would love to see some pics of your setup if ya can mate?
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

using existing winders and clutch mecanisum.
motor i had here was a 24 volt not verry convinient have to hok up 2 batteries, but owrks as a trial. winds up/down no problems.
just need to find a high torque 12 volt motor, also needs gearing down by about half, its just to fast for accurate movements.

Carl, When I was researching ways of raising the cutting head on my DIY bandsaw I came acros a yank that took an ATV winch, he dismantled the spool end, and replaced the drum with a sprocket, by memory he shortened the housing - reused most parts & he fitted the drive socket to spline onto the shaft. The setup looked very proffesional.
interestingly the 3 ton winch I bought for my mill was the same design and could have the same mod however I'm using cable, but if I were to use chain then this mod would be my first choice. I'll search my pc as I'm sure I would have saved some photos, it was such a smart mod for a chain drive.
cheers,
Dean.
Edit: cant find any pics however google was my freind and found the source of info, here's the link http://www.forestryforum.com/board/i...?topic=57499.0Last edited by spray-tech; 3rd August 2012 at 10:08 PM. Reason: more info
