Default Shed for Milling - Derek Doak

    Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen

I was in need of some specialty timber last week and paid a visit to Derek Doak in Naval Base, WA.

I had seen the start of his new shed for milling, but as I got there, I could hear the new mill flashed up and working.
Without Derek knowing, I took a couple of photos of him allegedly working. He was milling a stunning piece of Jarrah. Had to take some photos of that as well. This Jarrah had it all, Blackfleck, curl, fiddleback, it had EVERYTHING!!!!

This shed should make milling a little more pleasant, may need some drop down sides as well to prevent lat afternoon sun or rain being blown in from the West.

    Anyhoo, enjoy the photos
    Sincerely
    Willy

PS I did get the timber I was after as well, some nice Blackbutt for a project

    Hi Willy
Certainly agree that's some nice looking jarrah there.
Have known Derek for a while and althought I havent't been to his yard in a while have bought a fair bit of timber from him in the last 2-3years.
Had some nice jarrah and marri that was used in a couple of commission's and bought some stunning Tasi blue gum most of which I have been holding on to for a while
It is a great place and there's always something to tempt you to get out the wallet

    Hello Mark
Yes, I have to agree. I often visit Derek without any intention of a purchase, then the bugger shows me some stunning timber that he knows I cannot leave behind. Cunning bugger

Hi Willy, the Tasi blue gum I bought was stunning, I didn't intend to buy it when I went there but ended up spending $600 on it Can't remember what I went there for In the first place
Still have most of it but used some to make a bookcase that has been collecting dust at the Boranup gallery.

I'd love to see some pics of the stunning blue gum and other timbers from Derek. I know a timber dealer just like that, he knows the bit that will make each bloke drool into his wallet lol

Don't think I've seen Tassie Blue Gum before

    Default Tasmanian blue gum

Hi,Here is a photo of some Tasi blue gum, purchased from Derek a while back.
I have resawn some for bookmatching as seen here, slightly wetted to show the grain.

It tears out somewhat when machined so care is needed.

    Thanks. Certainly is stunning !!

I wonder Is that grain pattern throughout the whole tree or just in butt or compression area ? I'm guessing it's from compression as I never saw Sydney BG like that. That pattern reminds me of Red Gum with interlocking grain.

Wouldnt know really I had never seen Tasi blue gum before so didn't know whether it was typical of the timber or not.I suspected it was quite unusual and bought as much as I could afford at the time as I got the idea I might not see anything like it again.
Mostly it was just narrow boards around 150mm wide or so.

It is quite difficult to machine but with care comes up very nice and is very much like East Indian satinwood in appearance.
