    Question Shindaiwa Chainsaw

I am looking at getting a new chainsaw with a 20" bar after my Chinese cheapie has broken down for the second time. I have a 16" Husky that I have been very happy with but is just not big enough to handle some of the trunks that I have been given to slab into bowl blanks. I read a review online by the US popular mechanics site and although they said all 5 saws were good the Husky was at the bottom of the pile so I thought I should have a good look around and see what is available.

When I checked out the local (and well respected) mower and chainsaw shop they recommended their Shindaiwa brand. They said that they are used and liked by a large number of their contractors and that they also have a very low rate of returns for repairs.

These machines are fully manufactured and assembled in Japan and come with a 5yr domestic and 2 yr commercial warranty which seems to indicated that they have to be of reasonable quality.

Does anyone have experience with these saws? I would appreciate any feedback.

    Steve

I have one. I have had it for about 6 of 7 years, hasn't missed a beat. But I don't use it commercially. Probably gets 25-30 hours per year.

Don't have one myself but have had good reports. I do own a 2 stroke commercial whipper snipper in that brand and it is a little beauty.

No experience with their c/saws but a mate used their whipper snippers in his lawn care business for about 15yrs, first one was still going when he bought the second after about 8yrs, was just worn out in the end but the second one is still going strong but is now only used occasionally as he no longer runs the lawn care business.

Another mate has one of their demo saws and he is very happy with it, but must admit he has only had it for a week or so.
    Cheers

    Default Stihl

My personal opinion is you can't beat a stihl.

    I bought my 034 AV in about 1983 - so 30years ago!

    Chrome lined bore.

Used it for firewood for 25 years - also had a sawmill for 15 odd years and it docked all our logs... then I sold the farm - now my 25 year old boys using it for fire wooding - falling trees etc (He's a faller with the environment dept).

I've seen all the others come and go... I paid a bit more than $800, 30 years ago for it. The equivalent model today is similar $

I was a forester for 8 years myself - we bought only stihl for the dept use...

Pro fallers - some went to huskys because they had a whisker more HP, (and more wood on the deck with a fallers brand in it = more pay) but most came back to sthl for the reliability factor - yes they cut more wood with the husky but the downtime for repairs etc ate up what they gained over the Stihl..

It's hard to beat Stihl - the models haven't changed that much... because they go it it right at the get go. They keep their price well and you can get parts etc almost anywhere.

If your serious about a saw - get a stihl...

If you look after it (clean air filters, clean fuel, right oil mix, chain adjusted and sharpened right, bar kept in good nick - and drive cog etc replaced when it wears, then it will likely go forever.

Abuse them with dirty fuel - dirty air, or run them hard, coz the chains blunt, loose, and the bar stuffed, the drive cog shagged, - and any chainsaw will give you grief.

I was pretty meticulous with the saw which is why it's lasted this long. That's coz I went thru a stihl chainsaw course that teaches you how to look after one. Son is the same - looks after it...

    Others mileage might vary.
