Good to cut furniture timber out of if the grain and colour is OK. I have cut shorts into table leg size and also some boards suitable for coffee tables. I have found them to be good as there is very little stress in the log so legs and boards come out nice and straight.

if they're free take them. good for front fence post or table legs or slab them 100mm thick. leave them to dry out for a few years and if people dont want them for coffee table ,turn them into rounds for the lathe. if you can afford the room and time it's money in the bank, but ican see where craig's coming from.

Go for it Carl.
If they are good solid logs, I'd be cutting them into step treads Minimum is normally 1.0m and they go for around $20 l/m a log and a 1m wide by 1.5m log you're looking at about 30m of step tread = $600.
But then again, you might already be rich and could do without the $'s??I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

yep 250 x 38 or some folkes like 250 x 50, but the pre-made steel stringers are made for 250 x 38.
Being such big logs and short, you'd expect them to have very little tension, so you could get away with 3 layers of undercutting before flipping the motor around so for 20 treads might only have to flip the motor around 6-7 times. One log 1.0 dia x 1.5m long given around 20 treads, take about 1.5 hours on your own. So you'd be on about $400 minus expenses - if you could do 'em quicker - you get richer. Even if it takes you a huge 6 hours to cut out 20 treads !!!!! ya still on $100/hour
Have a look at my thread on double cutting, should get you studied up on it...I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

You reckon you can do 3/ 1.5m step treads in one hour?
I reckon you can P!$$ that in and this would give you a wage of $90/hr if/when you sold treads for $20/lm
And if you undercut 2 or 3 layers at a time then you can get around flipping the motor by a third...
For step treads I like the little bit of extra work for the extra $'s and you can use up short logs. Can't cut a post out of them - no one needs a heap of 1m posts..... hmmm
That's got me thinking, cut large square posts. My BIL snatched a heap of 6x6 1.2's recently, I couldn't cut 'em quick enough - his work wanted them for handrail posts on big expensive looking decks, might be another use, could get through volume really quick this way too, being big logs they should stay true too???I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Love big posts, 8x8's look real good. Not cheap to mount though, the two stirrups I have made up for the school posts costed out at $100 each just for materials and galvanising, that was without taking into account me welding them up. Luckily the galv joint did the school a favour and threw them in the trough for free. Pick them up tomorrow, should look tough, made out of 200x6 flat bar
Stair treads is a good idea, maybe I had better start cutting a few and stacking them away
