In the USA and Canada, you can get one for US$1,300. In Oz the official distributor, Beaver, wants A$4,000. You can't get one without the engine (I asked). I have a friend going to Canada in July, they can bring one back as handlugage. I am investigating making one up with readily available aluminium-housed gearboxes, if that works out I can MAYBE get this mate to buy one for you. Maybe they can even get two??? I spoke to a local lopper who reckons they are a great unit.

I get my Canadian-made capstan winch in about a week - will post a 'user report'. Its the 2.5hp 4-stroke powered winch, rated 1.2 tonne, and only weighs 15kg. I'll be selling my tirfor then (1.2 tonne rated also), I find it too slow.

Rated 1.2 tonne means it will pull a dead weight of 1200kg [like a log] along the ground on a flat surface? If thats the case I guess it would pull a lot less up a steep slope like 30 +degree slope? Not such a big log then Guess u could double that with a pulley though .
Anyway looking forward 2 the report.Would it be a rude question aproximatly how much they cost

force required
Fr=umg on level ground
where: Fr is the force u need to apply to the rope to get it to move in Newtons N
u is the friction coefficient and the value depends on the surfaces in contact
m is the mass of the load in kg
and g is gravity 9.81m/s2
typical u figures might be
steel on ice 0.02 ......................slippery
brake pad on cast iron 0.45.......this is good as we want our cars to stop!
rubber on bitumen 0.9 ..............this is also good!
the range of u for wood/bark on dirt wood be huge at a guess
is it clay? wet? dry? firm? soft? sand? gravel?
lets assume u =0.5 for our log on some sort of dirt and we have a 1 tonne log
Fr =0.5x1000x9.81 and if we round up
= 5000 N
= 500 kg
so half the wieght of the log
this assumes that the dirt isnt building up in front of the log cos if it were that very quickly adds to the pull reqd as does up a hill
just nodded off so its time for bed

This particular winch requires a polyester rope - they recommend either 9.5mm (1.9t breaking strength), or 13mm (3.3t bs) double-braided polyester. I will get a 50m length, but will also have a 20m for shorter pulls. Again, light weight is an advantage. As the above have explained, the weight of log this will pull has no relation to the winch rating. It will happily pull a 10t log on flat ground, on rollers. However, it will only lift a 1.2t log off the ground, unless snatch blocks are used, which allow it to lift more, until the rope snaps! The winch will cost me $1,395 Canadian, a friend is collecting it for me. If you read back through this thread, you will get details of an Australian-made capstan winch, which is much more powerful, using a 6hp Honda, but from memory weighs 60kg.
