Storm Chaser
Every Time we get hit with a Summer storm, I grab the saw, hook the trailer up an go driving. I was rewarded after a recent storm. I found a Black Wattle that came down in a front yard, they were more than happy for me to take as much as I could. I milled it up on the bandmill and have stacked it away for a while. here are some photos.

Down here a. Mearnsii are called black wattle but I think around the country many acacia species are reffered as black wattle. It looks like Blackwood to me.
newjon, I notice you didn't debark it first, (I know thats hard to do). What type of band did you use? & did it dull any? I've found blackwood bark, particulary the dry stuff to be servere on band sharpness, its like cutting concrete.

Good score Jon. There was another post recently with all the "black wattles". I think Dai Sensei provided the list.

Spraytech, timber is Acaia Salicina( Sally Wattle ). This timber is great to cut, It machines well. I am using a Bimetal Blade from Henry brothers, it doesn't seem to to dull to quickly, I admit it would probably last longer if I debarked the Timber but I was in a hurry to get it cut up and stacked as I had to go away fo a couple of weeks. The only trouble I had cutting it was on 2 early cuts when I was going from saapwood into heartwood, the blade dived as the density changed. I think I might have aided it by feeding to fast when it went into the sapwood. I am still learning the in's and out's of being a bandit miller.
cheers,
Jon

Great way to get wood storm chaser. I'm from S. East of SA. and I have a large patch of scrub. (60 acres. It's prodominately Stringy bark and Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) I've also milled many of them. What you have there is a blackwood and loverly wood too. I always mill with bark on (lucas mill). We had a storm through here and I have 5 fairly large trees to mill roots and all. One thing to remember is that Blackwood is one of the most carcinogenic of woods. Always wear good mask.

Sally wattle is the timber of choice for the backs on blackwood veneered board. Some times its hard to pick front from back.

Helpful people to clean up storm damage.....been there, done that here too! Sometimes, if their kids are big enough, I let them roll the log chunks to the trailer for me
Nice score, any ideas on the future use/projects you have for them?
