Timber milling by hand the old way
Got steered towards this video through a blog I stumbled across. Superb viewing and could have watched for hours.
Worth watching in my opinion. Hope the link works, otherwise go to YouTube and search for "Artisans of Australia" and it should be first in the list.

Good link Ray and as you said very addictive.
We had a thread recently which asked how we removed the bark. I mentioned cutting it with an axe in a zig-zag pattern which I noted the axemen used.
I have a froe intended for use splitting shakes so quite small, but I have never seen or heard of one the size they used, but so practical (for easy splitting timber). I think they said it was 6' long.

this vidio came up last year and I copied it to use at a lecture I had to give on old methods of construction and timber conservation.
For the 18 min it played I had a rapt audience.Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.
Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.

What an excellent Video!!!!!!!!!Wasn't it great to see two mates quietly going about their business in such harmony. You have to marvel at the finished job, how those slabs fitted together so neatly more or less just by eye. Those two blokes surely know how to use an axe. A chainsaw is quicker no doubt but the satisfaction using those methods of yester year would make you glow with satisfaction.
Thanks for sharing such a gem of a video.Just do it!
