    Default WA Salmon Gum

    Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen
    Bit quiet on the timber milling front, but here is a few Gems from Derek Doak, some extremely hard WA Salmon Gum. Derek reckons it is one of the toughest timbers he has milled
    Enjoy

    Some info from the CSIRO book on Forest Trees of Australia

    With its coppery smooth bark and dark green glossy crown in season, Eucalytus Salmonophloia are amongst the most beautiful trees in the WA wheat belt and mining areas around Kalgoorlie. Millions of these trees have been cleared for farming, milled to shore up mines for use as second class railway sleeps and burnt to run the boilers and pumps on the Kalgoorlie pipeline. This tree will grow well in areas of 250 - 500 mm pa rainfall so we should probably be planting more of them.

    In terms of Janka hardness, here is an interesting list to show where it sits

    4270 Gidgee {Acacia cambagei}

    4190 Gimlet {Eucalyptus salubris)

    3960
    Dundas Blackbut {Eucalyptus dundasii}

    3840

    Mallet Brown {Eucalyptus astringens}
    Wandoo {Eucalyptus wandoo}

    3200

    Ironbark Grey {Eucalyptus paniculata}
    Ironbark Red Broadleaved {Eucalyptus fibrosa}
    Ironbark Red Narrowleaved {Eucalyptus crebra}
