Default Wireless Tachos for Engine Tune

    Hi fellas,

Was wondering where to get hold of a wireless tacho to check engine RPM on my saws?

Also, what brands good? And what brands to avoid?

    Cheers...

    Matt

Ebay has the them for $10 or thereabouts.
Even the cheap ones are accurate to about 10 RPM which is all you need for a chainsaw tune.
Those with an antenna wire you can wrap around the spark plug cable seem to be more sensitive than those that don't have one.

The things to watch out for are
    - some only go up to 10k rpm so that won't be any good to tune for 12k rpm.
    - some have slow display refresh times, 2s does not seem slow but it can be irritating when tuning and you have to remember to do it slowly. Half a second does not sound much better but I found it makes a difference The problem is they rarely state the display refresh times

If you want a quality item that will last for a long time then you'll need to spend around $100
I have a Sendec that I bought from Bailey's in the US and that is permanently mounted on my power head so it needs to be super vibe resistant - for tuning this is not needed. It only has a 1.5s second display refresh but is super rugged.

The other one I have is a Fast Tach which has a 1s refresh rate and no antenna - it has to be very close to the spark plug to pick up the pulses.

The Tiny Tach has a 1/2s refresh time and seems to be the flavour of the month with CS operators in the US.

These are a good cheap type of tacho, https://www.wrightwayrestorations.com/?p=454 You turn the centre dial to extend the wire & when it vibrates you read the RPM off the scale. My dad is a mechanic & has used one for over 50 years.
