Default Anyone worried about theft of your mill?

    Hello everyone.

It seems these days anything not nailed down has the potential to 'walk'. I'm looking at leasing a mill this Summer and it will on occasion be set up in various farmers paddocks within full view of a (albeit remote) road.

Some of these locations are reasonably remote and any scoundrel could make a bit of noise in the dead of night without detection.

Do any of you leave your mills out like this, or perhaps just compromise and put the milling/slabbing heads back on the ute at the end of the day, or do a complete break-down and set-up each day if you think the area is dodgy?

Just wondering about this and also security of packets of lumber and thought I'd ask.

    Thanks,
    Tony

This question came up on the forum a while ago. Might be worth having a look in the archives. We leave our 2 dogs with the gear. Never had a problem.

Not a bad idea at all. Keep fingers crossed the tent doesn't get nicked.

You can get mobile phone connected alarms - these have become pretty common, a mate has one in his container/mobile workshop for when it is away from head office. In your situation power would be the only real problem.

On the subject of anti-theft devices, a court in the ACT has rules that it is legal to use a computer application to track your stolen goods & that the Police may act on that information to get a search warrant & raid the place.

(Guy had his Ipad stolen, used an online app to find where it was, went round, heard the ring tone from outside, called the Police who searched the place with a warrant, found the stolen Ipad & a garage full of hot gear. Defence unsuccessfully argued that all the evidence was 'contaminated' as the owner wasn't entitled to find his property by calling it.)

I like to bring home the motor, I figure either, johnny thief wants a whole mill or if he don't want the mill he wants the engine - either way I got it covered.
I've also slept 'in' the mill more than once when on mobile jobs, makes much harder to pinch, plus added bonus of no travel time lol oh Also get it insured - about $300 a year for my model 10

Indeed. A potential buyer on the black market would be within his rights to ask for a discount if he had to take you as part of the package.

    Al

I'm going well, but not doing much at all in the timber milling line. I'm currently fully occupied installing some underground storm piping for our new rainwater tanks. After having been at it for four days, I can now add plumbing to the list of jobs I don't want to do for a career path.

Yes, the sleepers have been good and I have used them as mini retaining walls for the crusher dust under the tanks as well as supports for vertical pipework. I ripped them in half for that purpose. That was not my intention when I first got them from you. They were going to be for flower beds only.
