    Default Brisbane 2016 ShowThread

OK I know it's on as we have a stand there and there have been a couple of threads but I don't want to hear about Maleny or anything else I'd like to hear about Brisbane and if you enjoyed it, what you brought, who you saw, what you did, etc.

Surely someone must have gone and taken som pictures that could be put on here.

Remember.... "Ïf there's no pictures it didn't happen!"

C'mon folks let's see or at least hear something. The overall enthusiasm so far is a little underwhelming.

I do hope you don't mean don't post unless you have a photo.

I bought a few turning blanks, a set of diamond hones, some sandpaper, a keyless chuck and a dozuki saw.

There was lots of wood available. Some very impressive pieces! Love the recycled railway sleepers.

Inside the main hall, was dominated by Carbatec and Timbercon. The feeling was one of lots of space and the vendors were not squeezed in together. General feeling from the people I spoke to was that there were fewer visitors than previous years but that could be because it was a) the first day of the show and b) a Friday (a normal working day ie not a public holiday). There were however, quite a few school kids.

Overall, I was underwhelmed by the show.

    Hell no.

Post anything people, we all want to know if it was enjoyable, what you brought, who you saw, what you did, what was your favourite thing, etc. etc.

Pictures are a bonus but would be great to see what we are (or aren't) missing. At least a shot of the forum stand so we can make sure we were really there and see what's going on.

With everyone carrying mobile phones and many with iPads and other things I'm surprised that there haven't been a heap of pics on here already. Probably too busy taking selfies with wood and admiring them to pass them on to the forums.

Due to being seriously under-whelmed when I attended the 2015 Timber and Working With Wood Show, I decided last year that I wouldn't waste my time and money attending the show in 2016. As it happened, I had to be in Brisbane on Friday for a medical appointment quite close to the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds, so against my better judgement, I decided to go to the 2016 TWWW Show while SWMBO wandered up town to spend money.

I'm afraid that I was under-whelmed once again. The number of exhibitors has decreased for at least the third year running. The bulk of the exhibitors are retail machinery, tool, and hardware outlets exhibiting their products in a "Trade Show" environment. With all of those trade exhibitors now having Internet Sales Outlets, I don't believe that the Trade Show format generates many additional sales for those exhibitors any more. If a vendor has their business interstate with no show room locally, we all purchase via the vendor's Internet shop anyway.

Additionally, a comment that I heard from three show visitors this year was that they objected to paying the $15.00 entry fee to visit the Trade Show part of the TWWWS. I hadn't thought about that aspect of it before, but now that it's been mentioned, I can see their point. Also, as with 2015, the Show organiser's seem to have filled empty exhibition positions with exhibits that are not in any way related to the Timber & Working With Wood theme of the show.

We still have the dedicated timber sellers attending the TWWWS, which is a big plus point for many people attending the Show. This is one group of the trade exhibitors who need to attend a Woodworking Show of some sort, as the sale of quality timber via the Internet in Australia is still in it's infancy, when compared for instance with Internet Sales of quality timber in the USA.

The number of exhibits that were focused on actually displaying and/or demonstrating "working with wood" was, as usual, few and far between, with some of the demonstrations being little more then an advertisement for the machinery or tools being used, instead of being a meaningful demonstration of woodworking technique.

I really think that the TWWWS organisers need to modernise their organisation of the TWWWS format. A show format that focuses on woodworking education, technique demonstration, exhibitions of woodworking excellence, and so on, is I think a format that has a future. The Trade Display section, I believe, should only be supporting act, and should not conflict with the main event.

The following are two Woodworking related "events" that I believe TWWWS organiser's could learn from......

Turnfest, held on the Gold Coast during the Easter long weekend each year, has a three day woodturning education focused conference format, with an attached but separate trade show area. I've been a day visitor to Turnfest on two occasions, and have learnt a huge amount about woodturning. Each time I've attended, I've also been inspired to go away and try something new myself. Next year I'll have to make sure that I set aside the whole of the Easter weekend to attend the entire Turnfest event.

Woodworking in America (WIA) has now been running for five years (I think), and offers a format that I believe has application to the TWWW Show. I had the opportunity to attend Woodworking in America a few years ago. WIA has so far been held once per year, in a different location each year. Although, from mutterings in the US woodworking press, it appears that multiple locations each year are in the plans.

WIA takes the form of a Conference focused on woodworking, with a wide range of topics covered by; seminar sessions, demonstrations, training classes, lectures, discussion panels, etc. There is a Woodworking trade show located in an adjacent hall, but the trade show is open only between conference sessions, so as to not conflict with conference activities. Most of the trade exhibitors also sponsor one or more activities within the Conference, but without that sponsorship detracting from the educational aspect of the conference activity.

On the second day that I attended that year's WIA, I joined a 2 hour hands-on training course where the Instructor's goal was to have each participant master the production of a hand cut dovetail joint in 2 hours. It was fun, and I did manage at first attempt to produce a well cut neat fitting dovetail joint in 2 hours, and was able to take those skills away and still use them regularly - and my Leigh Jig has gathered dust ever since.

How many people who have attended a TWWW Show have gone back for a second day at that year's TWWWS because what was on offer at the show was so extensive and so good, and worth seeing again, that more than one day was required to be able to absorb all of what was on offer ?

In my mind, it's time for the Timber & Working With Wood Show to re-invent itself.

    Hi,
Yesterday every time I tried to get on the Forum to see if there were any pictures of the show the server was too busy, maybe those trying to post pictures had the same problem.

I spent a couple of hours on the stand yesterday and believe that Ian demonstrating how to make wooden nuts was the most interesting event at the show. ian's bench was also attracting a lot of interest.

Generally I was totally underwhelmed by the show and wonder if it can survive. I think there needs to be a re-think of the format.

    Default Pics at last..

Hi Folks, sorry for keeping you all in suspense with pictures, but I've been busier than a one-armed paper-hanger the last two days (& forgot to take a camera for the second day running ), so TomL kindly took the above pics & uploaded them for me. So proof at last that we were there! We've actually been pulling a steady crowd to our stand. When you are on the stand & yakking for most of the day, it's hard to get an impression what's going on in the rest of the building, but a couple of times, when walking across the hall to let volunteers in, I noticed the numbers around some of the stands were pretty thin! We had a steady stream of visitors, Paul's saw collection (some beautiful numbers there!) and a few other show & tell items worked well as drawcards. I got a lot of genuine interest in my "primitive" tap, and for those who asked where to go for further information on wood threading, I had the perfect cue for talking up the Forum!

I don't think today's crowd was anything like yesterday's, so overall numbers will probably be down (again!). I have to agree, there just isn't enough going on to generate excitement, very little sawdust flying. Not a single woodie club this year, and few interesting demos. The entire show fits into the front section of the pavillion (remember when it used to fill all three & spill out into the yard?). Three or four major retailers who have well-oiled websites anyway, just don't cut the mustard, in my view. Some of the the smaller stands, like Terry Gordon's are still great value, with Terry there in person to demonstrate and talk planes. He's a great ambassador for his company, always friendly & helpful no matter what your level of woodworking skill.

However, overall, I have to agree with RoyG's comment "In my mind, it's time for the Timber & Working With Wood Show to re-invent itself.

But who knows what tomorrow may bring? I'm encouraged by the fact that those who've stopped by the Forum stand, young & old, seem to be pretty passionate about woodworking of some kind or other. And I'm heartened by the number of younger blokes (it was pretty much all blokes, sad to say - where are you female woodies??) who showed genuine interest & stayed to ask lots of questions. So we'll be there bright-eyed & bushy-tailed in the morning, & hang in 'til the innings is declared.....

Now it's time to soothe the old throat with a nice, cleansing ale before dinner....
    Cheers,
    IW

Default 2016 Brisbane T&WWW Show Timbecon Stand

I was to be in Brisbane working on the Timbecon stand, but unfortunally I got bitten by my table saw the day before we were to fly out.
So in my absence, my only duty(with my good hand) is to upload pictures to the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Timbecon/
I stopped by here to hear about people's experience & noticed not a lot of pictures being posted. These are only of the Timbecon stand(sorry), hopefully I get a bit more from other areas of the show tomorrow
    Cheers Y'all

Re royg I have to agree with him. Re bne do this weekend I found there were a couple of demos I felt were in the spirit of the thing. One in particular a turner with an attitude to skite about, well set up, good gear and top communicator. The rest of the critique, wish I could be there sunday pack up time with fist full of cash. There is a really good chance I would save some of them a bit of work. Some nice machineryand gear to be seen,

Well......Spoke to Mal at Boutique Timbers, (I admit he hadn't been there for several years due to illness), but he says it has been one of the best shows he has ever attended in Brisbane, good crowds, timber demand and sales very good, I admit that's only second hand opinion, but he certainly is planning to go back next year

    Default All done & dusted...

Well that's Brisbane 2016 in the bag.

Apparently, today's attendance was down quite a bit on yesterday, but you wouldn't have known it on the Forum stand! We had people stopping by the stand constantly until about the last 45 minutes, then suddenly there was no-one there. I decided to clean offmy benchtop & start packing some of the gear away, when one last gent came by & was so keen on seeing the tap & threader in action I fired it all up one last time..

A couple more pics I took during the day, not great photos, but shows a couple more members: Day3b.jpg Day3a.jpg

Paul's (Bushmiller) industrial strength saw rack: Saw rack.jpg

No pics of any other features, I didn't get time to take in the rest of the show, just a few quick forays to buy a few items. Anybody else got anything they think might interest those who weren't there??

My big impulse buy, in the last hour of the show, was a side rebate plane from McJings - it looks reasonably well-made, modelled after the Stanly 79/Record 2506, but with some differences that may or may not affect performance. I will wait to see how it performs, but I'm sure it can be persuaded to do the job.

The post-mortem on the show itself will no doubt continue, but I think we done as good as we could, this year. Thanks to everyone who brought along something to put on the table. I really shouldn't single anyone out, but I want to give special tanks to Rod, who helped me get the posters & pics properly attached (pays to be tall, sometimes ) & kept things going during the first hour or so on Friday, while I was getting myself organised & trying to demonstrate my medieval tap to interested people at the same time. You also won the saw in the draw, Rod, so I'll have to send it on to you.

Another star to Paul for his saw display; but everyone did a great job so thanks again to all.

Other winners of the draw were: TomL - you won the pencil-gauge

There were also some consolation prizes. Two pieces of nice Crow's Ash, donated by Xanthorroeas (there, spelled it right, this time) : RGAL & jaksam

And a couple of mallets (something like this: Buloak hdle.jpg

    Shedman & Bushmiller

I realised, too late, we should've done the draw on day 1, & if any winner failed to turn up, we could have simply re-drawn, but you learn as you go.....

    Cheers,
    IW
