No worries about timing of the announcement issatree - I understand and thanks for the reply. I am not sure what happened about your flyers - as you know we support the clubs at all of our shows, and we wouldn't say no to an event that wasn't in direct conflict with ours. I wasn't at the Melbourne Show last year (had personal issues in Sydney that i had to stay back for) so not sure from reading your reply and the previous email whether the no was at the show or via email. If you wanted to promote your event this year we can help - just let me know.
    Regards Liz

issatree - me again i have just been told that i didn't read your posts correctly - the understanding is that you wanted to put your flyers in different places around the show rather than on the notice board as offered. If this was the case well I would have said no to that.................reason being that if i gave you permission, our experience tells us that we would have others wanting to do the same once they had seen you placing flyers everywhere. We are not opposed to clubs using the notice board at all - and have made a note to myself to encourage clubs to do so and have notice board more prominently displayed at shows. We don't allow commercial notices to be posted for reasons which are obvious e.g.protection of exhibitors who pay for space, and then some soul comes along and tries to sell product by postings on a notice board - yes they do try!! Still let me know if you want to promote this year i have some ideas how we could help you.
    Regards Liz

I'm guessing you must have read something more into what I wrote than was actually there. You need to stop looking for hidden messages between the lines and maybe lighten up a little.

    • From a wheelchair eye contact can't be made all one sees from a wheelchair is navels and men,s flys this can be intimidating in a crowded venue. I fully understand, but that can occur anywhere there is a crowd. Not the best got little people or children either. However that is not necessarily a venue or T&WWWShow problem in it's own right. It's just one of the unfortunate things that some people have to contend with.
    • Most counters are too high it is very hard to make a purchase especially if there is a pressing crowd behind you and some inconsiderate a&%^)$ tries to
    • move your wheelchair so they can get in. Bench heights are nothing to do with the venue or the organizers I would think it is mostly an OH&S thing to save the backs of the people working at the benches. You need to take this up with the individual businesses, they are the ones responsible for the bench heights an the welfare of their staff From memory the UBeaut stand is the only low one I had come across at the show. Maybe that's because of something from my past or maybe we just have shorter staff.
    • Abel bodied people tend to step over you if they can't move the chair out of the way. There are inconsiderate pigs everywhere. Sometimes it may even be the fault of the disabled person or their minder. Everyone should be considerate of others whether able bodied or disabled. Unfortunately politeness, thoughtfulness, respect and consideration of others is something sadly lacking in todays' (stuff you jack I'm all right) society. However, this also is not the fault of the venue nor the organizers.
    • At the Shed there is not enough disabled parking, at the show grounds it was a lot better eventually. I haven't looked at this since the show was last there but I'm sure there would be a lot more now due to the new car parks put in for the Convention Center complex.
    • I have noticed that most disabled people have given up complaining about the rude and inconsiderate attitude shown toward them because the able bodied just are just not interested, I sense this from you Neil. Not sure where you gleaned that insight from. You must have been reading something different to what I wrote. You have no idea just how totally wrong you are and I take exception your unfounded comment.

Before you make comment about access for disabled people I challenge you Neil to hop in a wheelchair and try to navigate your self around a place like the woodwork show for a day at the least.
PHIL No where did I say anything about access for disabled people. I have great empathy for all disabled people especially those confined to a wheelchair, as I spent almost 4 years in a wheel chair after being run over by a drunken DH in Perth back in the mid 70's, that's why I often walk with a limp or sit whenever I can. So I know full well what it is like. At least now there is wheel chair access to most venues, back then there was virtually nothing.

Not only that but I have run woodturning classes for people who were wheelchair bound, blind and with a number of other handicaps including lost limbs. Also U-Beaut (Pauline and myself) have for many years sponsor Wheelchair sports camps for children and Wheelchair basket ball.

Phil I'm pretty sure I have nothing more to say to you other than. Try to look on the bright side, at least your wife is able to come to the shows and I presume enjoy being with you. You should be happy for that. Follow the turn right instead of left tip in my previous post and maybe stop looking for scape goats to blame for things that are out of their control.

I wont be driving home at that time nor would I be considering the tram/train alternative. My back will not put up with standing on crowded public transport carrying my heavy purchases. Why not let it run until 7 or 8 on the Friday to let people come in from work and go home after the evening rush. If it finishes at 5, I will be leaving at 3. That gives me 5 hours only, so I might even give that day a miss. If you were to finish later on the Friday you could always start at 11 or 12.
Have a look around at the shows now and you will see that after 3:00pm the venues in all states are almost devoid of visitors, sometimes as many as 50 might stay on until stumps.

When the shows ran from 10:00am to 9:00pm the hall was all but empty but 6:30pm. Running one night until 7-8pm would mean that the hall would empty out by around 5:00pm which is the current closing time and mainly the reason why it is that time.

I for one would hate to go back to the extended hours of the past. You make no more sales in that time than in the time the shows are now open, and I don't care if that sounds mercenary. The bottom line is for exhibitors to make money and turn over stock.

I have heard people say that the show should run for 4 days. Yeah great, same scenario as above, the same amount of people will come and the exhibitors will have to put in an extra day for no more gain. Surprisingly the shows became more profitable for many exhibitors after the very civilised hours we now have were introduced many years ago.

Avoid the 5pm traffic or public transport by staying in town for an hour or so. Walk across the road and have a meal, go to the shops. Enjoy yourself in town for a while. there's lots to do and see that will ease the traffic burden.

    Neil

Yep, Neil, You are right. I can just head out the door at 5pm with my 3 metre long slab of cloud rosewood and wander down the road looking for something to eat on my way back to the station. Come to think of it, if I take a couple of triton multistands with me I can set up the slab as a temporary table and ask for a discount where I eat because I brought my own furniture. Maybe I could hire a couple of Windsor chairs from the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodwork and set up a temporary restaurant out the front door.

Honestly, I am trying to find the positives in this and my suggestions are aimed at making it work. It is in the best interests of all of us for the show to work.

In the post you quoted from me, I was asking about what arrangements were in place when the show was at Jeff's shed before for picking up large items, parking for trailers etc. Surely Neil or Liz know what was done or what is being planned for this year.

I do not think this is unreasonable to ask.

I certainly will not entertain the idea of bringing my car into the CBD on a Friday BUT I may consider bringing it in on a Sunday if the cost of doing so does not outweigh the discounts that I may be receiving for purchasing at the show.

I want to support the show; I would like to see it continue. Neil, you don't sell the big stuff. I buy the big stuff and also the small stuff. I think you are putting your own interests ahead of the best interests of the show. Probably I am too. We all look towards what is best for us, It is human nature to do so.

All I want is acknowledgements of my concerns and an honest answer that addresses them. Nobody wants to have their opinions and concerns brushed over like you have just done to me.

If you want to compare certificates of appreciation Neil I have them also as well as numerous letters thanking me for various aids that I have made for disabled people, ALL mine are for voluntary work I never took a penny for my efforts, I can't comment about your turning classes, so you see I turned right some time ago from the vitriol in your reply I think that you are still on the left track.

As a JP I am aware of the value of peoples reputations and would never call anyone a liar, I resent that implication

I will not be going to the show at Jeff's shed but that does not mean that I do not wish it success, I have to wonder how much discretionary spending the exhibitors will miss out on because that money will be used to pay for car parking or the meal across the road.

For what it is worth the best the show was ever held was the Exhibition Building in the Carlton Gardens it went down hill from there when it left there for the other venue.

Like I said earlier I hope the show is successful and you make plenty of money.

I for one will be there, no matter where it is! and I have been to all the past venues.
It is just my mode of transport that may change, depending on what I plan to spend on, large or small items.

You can not please all the people all the time.

I have been to a few T & WWWS when they were at Southbank. The last one I planned to go to, even pre purchased a ticket, I did not attend as the car park was full. I had been working in South Melbourne so I was in the car, saw the car park full signs and kept driving home.

For me the showgrounds are on the other side of town and if I was to purchase a bulky item, I would not want to take it on public transport, or as when I purchased a scroll saw at "Jeff's Shed", go home, pick up the car and return.

I am more likely to go to Southbank than Showgrounds if I find I have the day (or half day) to spare.

For me, an ideal venue would perhaps be Caulfield Race Course, but timing is everything with major events there in October (Caulfield Cup) and again it may not be the perfect venue for everybody.

I don't like the Shed due to parking issues but at the same time the event at the Showgrounds went down hill. Stopped going. May go this year to see if it has picked up.

Well, I have just checked my diary; I’m retired now and have such a full diary, that’s just how it is.

I’m free for the weekend of the show, if Groggy is running the roster as he did two years ago when I helped out, I would like him put my name down for first cab off the rank, on Friday morning.
