    Default New Friends

I'd like to add my thanks to the good natured Christos and Crowie and Neil.
Good to see familar faces again and meet some more and join in the endless banter. It is no wonder this great Forum continues to grow.

I got to catch up with "friends" on some of the stands and chat with Mal, Greg and his crew from Boutique Timbers. I even found a very nice Snakewood board.
Another Auriou rasp has been added to my collection thanks to Christos pointing me to the Henry Eckert stand.

My highlight was getting a mallet made.
I was chatting to the Woodturners group and told them I was looking for a mallet.

"We can make you one if you give us a piece of wood"........they say. I was a bit surprised at this as I realised they were making a serious offer. So I quickly decided to take them up on their offer.

I dash out to Mal and we find a short block of Mackay cedar.......my choice. It wasn't as heavy as the preferred species but was a more manageable size.

I take it back to the Woodturners..................."Do you have a saw so we can cut it down to size".....
    No problem...............
I dash down to Major and they unplug the tablesaw they were demonstrating and plug in a bandsaw................a few minutes later I have three "Mallet blanks"...........thanks Reagan.

    Back to the Woodturners
Several minutes of discussion/suggestions and good natured arguments and one blank is selected, marked up and mounted on a Woodfast lathe.
Steve proceeds to turn my mallet, stopping several times to make sure I am happy and to fit it to my hands.
He adds a couple of burnt grooves for trim.

I now have a great medium weight custom made mallet........

With a bit more time I am sure I could have involved more exhibitors and ended up with a car load of mallets for every use I could have imagined.

The pic of the finished mallet inclues the other Mackay Cedar blanks and a poorly hand-shaped one they I made recently ( I don't have a lathe, yet).

    I had a great Show.

I'm guessing the store you are talking about is Bench Standard (Bench Standard | Professional Woodworking Supplies and Woodcraft Accessories). They had some good bits 'n pieces. I grabbed a catalogue as I will order some router bits and other bits 'n bobs from them.

Fantastic to see new players, it looked like they did a decent trade too.

    Hi Nathan,

Yep, that's them! The clamp guides were a particularly good buy.

What a fantastic weekend. I just about talked myself out telling all and sundry about the forums, not to mention wandering around looking at things for two days.

I know it may have been smaller this year but on Sunday afternoon I was still finding stuff I hadn't seen yet after two days of combing the place. Actually I love watching the ornamental turning guys do their stuff and made mention that it was sad to not see them this year. Guess what I missed and they were right near the forum stand, do'h!

Hopefully some of the people we talked to take the plunge and sign up. I told everyone you guys were all pretty nice, so you better live up to my promises

Anyone have some suggestions on what to make with some crows ash? A bunch seems to have found its way into the back of my ute. That stuff is darn heavy!

Thanks again to Christos for being point man on this operation. Was great seeing all the forum peoples again. Had a blast and I'm looking forward to next years "show holiday" already.

    Default Show review

Thanks for all your kind comments and enquiries about Mal and Boutique.
He was on is feet for 4 days and enjoyed every moment, not bad for a man still waiting on more operation(s) later this year.
Timber sales went well, never seem to have enough camphor and the northern silky boards only lasted until Friday pm. The secret is to have good quality stock and plenty of chalk.
Regarding attendance, I was informed that numbers were at the highest increase in rate for years, over 550 over last year, so that bodes well for next year.
After being a little nervous about the outside location, (especially with the high winds and tall slabs) it worked very well and timber collection system out the back gate was the best for any show we've attended.
    Thanks again.
Now back to the farm and Cremorne drops again.....

Great story re the mallet Scally. This thing is new to me: a kerf gauge? Can you explain how it works?

    Default Kerf Gauge

Hi Larks, unfortunately I probably cannot explain how the Kerf Gauge works.

I think DaveTTC brought it along with his hammer. I am not sure if he said that he made it or won it?
He attempted to explain its use but I mustn't have been concentrating. There is probably a Thread on the Forum that explains how to use it.

I found this video from Bridge City that might explain it:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ6_S6lZKLI

You set the top little bit to the thickness of your saw/router bit or whatever. At about 2.55m into the video it shows you how to do it.

Then set the body to the width of the board you want to fit in a slot.

You now have a tool with "Two" measurements..............The longer one includes allowance for the Kerf of the blade/bit...............I think.

It looks pretty neat so I think I should try to make one.
At least then, I will be able to work out how to use it.

    Good luck

I have not used the Kerf Master yet but have watched a couple of youtube links about it. I got it as part of a swap on another forum and might organise a similar one here.

Love catching up on more stuff since the show is over
