Default Thoroughly enjoyed my first TWWW show (Canberra)

And by "thoroughly enjoyed" I mean I bought a few things

Veritas LA Jack and rip carass saw from Jim Davey (JDM Woodworm), Veritas dual marking gauge, Titebond, clamps and stone holder from Carbatec, Japanese 6mm long-handled paring chisel from, well, the Japanese Tools shop and the A55 Smoothing plane and convex spokeshave of course direct from Terry at the HNT stall where I got to play with a bunch of planes; I now have four of his Gidgee + brass planes and love them.

Previously I've had to buy everything including all my planes online so it was nice to try before you buy, and see if I liked the Japanese style planes (I didn't).

Also picked up some timber, a board of Toona ciliata from All Class Timber Services for a lightweight box project.

Yep I did see the "shirt" at the Japanese Tools stall ... how much larger has the show been in previous years?

I thought the timber range was pretty good from the two or three sellers inside and out in the carpark.

Most of the display pieces from the Woodcraft Guild were small boxes and things, only a couple of cabinet pieces that I was interested in looking at - the rock maple and blue gum cabinet was very nice.

I hope this year's show isn't a sign of demise as I'd be keen to go in future years.

    Hi,
They had much more out side stuff including mills and surfacing machines and they did not fill so much space inside with catering tables and Ubute, Carroll's Woodworks, Timbecon and others do not bother to come any more.
At least we still get a show.

Nothing like a bit of retail therapy, especially when really nice tools like you have purchased follow you home. Now it is is just a matter of waiting for the VISA card statement to catch up with you!
    Enjoy your tools,

    Alan...

The experience is often relative to other experiences.
I went today and enjoyed it as a first time experience of the Canberra show.
I bought a Gifkins Jig, which I have been researching for some time, but wanted to buy in person rather than online.

I am from Adelaide and we haven't had a show for about 10 years, but this year I managed to get to Sydney, Melbourne and now Canberra. It is a bit of overkill, but I was travelling on business a lot and found myself in these cities at the time of each show. I suspect it will be a long time before I get to any of these again.

I enjoyed Sydney the most, possibly as it was the first one in ten years and I felt had the most content.
I did not enjoy Melbourne very much. I felt it was considerably smaller, but it was also very cramped, and hard to get around. The club area in particular was impassable, so I just had a glancing look.
I think Canberra rated very highly. I accept that they did not have the Lucas Mill or as much outside timber, but the rest was similar with some minor differences. Most importantly it was well laid out with room to move around and have a good look.

I don't believe that Carrols or UBeaut were at any of the shows I attended.

I have been involved in running a conference for a number of years and we have had to cancel because costs and interest have made it unviable and the same is happening with a lot of shows, so we should be grateful that we still have these shows in most cities. I suspect it may not long before som other cities drop off, or they happen every second year.

Congratulations to the local wood group(s) involved as there was some impressive product on display, both in the competition and for sale.

We should all support these when we can.

    Regards

    Bauldy
