    Default For the doubters

Well, the Chiro has sorted out the sciatica!!!

I have had a pain free week and will not be seeing her again unless needed.

I do my stretching exercises and that helps tremendously. So I will keep them up.

    Default Chiropractors

    G'day ARtme,

Thats good ............. I've got great confidence in some chiropractors .......................... always able to sort me out when necessary and am quite dubious about the claims that its all some sort of confidence trick.

That is good news indeed that this is being sorted out.

I have to admit that despite what other folks have experienced I am still a skeptic, not just about chiros, but other para-medical treatments as well. Even though it's anecdotal, my thoughts are strongly influenced by my mum's experience with a back problem about a decade ago. We went through 3 very expensive (i know this because U was the one paying!) chiros for her back problem over period of about 2 years and none made any difference so we gave up and the problem eventually went away by itself. What really me off was when we stopped going to the last guy, who if anything seemed to make the problem worse, he called my mum and harassed her to keep returning for treatment. On reflection we should have reported this joker but the last thing my mum wanted was the agro.

Sometimes I wonder if my skepticism now hampers my own treatment as I cannot think of one time when these treatments have made any sort of difference for any of my problems and sometimes they have made it worse. When I had bursitis in my shoulders the two different physios I went to could do nothing and it also eventually it went away by itself. The same happened with a sore feet problem which I started to self treat using orthotics. About that time I had to travel so I went along and had a professional look at my feet. He said the orthotics were good and to keep using them. I told him I had to fly to the US within 24 hours and could he do anything for me. He strapped my foot up very tightly with thick sticky plaster and said I might hurt a bit but to leave the strapping on for 7 days or until the smell became too much and then to take it off. Well 48 hours later I was in Washington and I was in agony and could not walk. I took the strapping off and the skin on my heels and balls of my feet had developed deep cracks. I went to a doctor and he said my feet must have swelled up on the plane and caused the problem - I would have thought the so called professional would know about that. Anyway I went back to using the orthotics and that problem also went away by itself.

SWMBO is a dressage and horse jumper and she always has some niggle or other from a fall, or a horse pushes her into a wall etc so she seems to always be having something or other attended to and goes through tubes of anti inflammatory creams and pills etc like there's no tomorrow. I seem to cop about the same level of niggle and strains from moving big slabs or lifting chainsaw mills or just stepping up onto a step and pulling a hammy etc, but I go to no one and when I sit back and think about it we end up with about the same degree of aches and pains at the end of the day.

Now despite all that I am always pleased to hear when someone's pain is alleviated by whatever method.

We are all going to get a bit busted up as we age, but whatever makes life happy and productive is always good news. I am still sitting on the fence a little after my problems but i think there is something good in what they can do, it's just that i don't think the quality or knowledge of some chiros are up to scratch. Being pain free cannot be over estimated so glad to hear you found a good chiro.

One of the more recent definitions of health from the WHO or somesuch is the capacity of adapt and self-manage. That replaced 'a state of complete physical, psychological and social well-being' (1948) and you can see why with an ageing population and the burden of disease being non-communicable ones.

So whatever works for folk in the quest to self-manage. All professions have their poor performers. The more powerful the tool the greater the burden of error and adverse events - surgery and meds don't exactly come up smelling entirely like a rose in this respect.

I used to use chiros but there was really only one who figured out how to help with the worst problem. For 10 years I've used physios and again it's only the skilled and experienced ones that help. Chiros I regard as roadside assistance, to get me going again. Physios help me maintain the 'vehicle' so as to avoid break downs. It beats me how many people as they age don't actively work to maintain the health they have and then when it fails expect a silver bullet to solve their problem.
    Cheers, Ern

Well, I for one will never go there.
I had one treatment that made everything worse and added more pain.
Turned out she broke 3 ribs, didn't realise that at my age I might have OsteoPorosis.
    I'll never go there again.

That sounds like gross incompetence. Did you make a complaint to the relevant authorities? http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Notification...ification.aspx

But one case may illustrate a generalisation; it can't establish it. Would you refuse ever to consult a surgeon because of 'Dr Death' or the 'Butcher of Bega'?

    Ern you are so right.
However this was not my first bad visit to a Chiro just an example and definitely my last one, as it is the only one we have up here.
No, I didn't make a complaint, as it took a while to realise why my ribs were aching like that and by then it was too late, I had no proof.

Good chiros are very hard to find.
I've only ever found 3 that I would go back to a 2nd time.
Some of them are hopeless & some of them are just scammers.
