Default We all need good knees.

Twelve months ago I was wheeling my wheelbarrow backwards out of the woodshed and failed to notice my aluminium ladder in the way.
I got tangled up with it where my left leg was scissored in it and the right side of my body was on top of it. At the time it felt like I had
severed a tendon as aluminium ladders have very sharp edges.
For a few weeks it was painful then improved for a few months. About two months ago it flared up which meant a round of visits to the
doctor, the specialist, the physio, the radiographer and finally the operating table a couple of weeks ago. Apparently I had mild arthritis,
fluid on the knee, a meniscus tear, a complex tear and a Bakers' Cyst.
I am currently doing exercises and getting around with crutches that fit up to the elbow. My left foot has puffed up to the point I cannot
put a shoe on so at least I am now wearing new slippers.
My wife insists that it cannot be too bad as I still go to the woodturning club but I insist that I will not be doing any turning for the time being.

    Hi,
Yes we do not bounce very well at our age.
    A speedy recovery anyway.
    Regards

Sorry to hear Allan. RICE, rest, immobilize, cold and elevate.
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

Oh come on Alan tell the truth the knee's gave out due to all the crawling you have done to Val over your life time together well thats what you told me.

Glad I looked at the original date. Alan nothing wrong with sitting turning I speak from experience.

Maybe want to look at your risk assessment.

    Ladders
#1 for involvement in DIY incident resulting in visit to Hospital Emergency
#1 for involvement in DIY incident resulting in admission into Hospital
#2 (after electrocution) resulting in a DIY related death!

"Walking backwards" is also pretty high up as a "risk factor" - forget the number but its something like 4X greater chance of injury than walking forwards.
Often we have no choice, but I doubt few of us really take 4x more precautions?

I like the Forest Gump quote "stupid as stupid does" .I should know this like most in life we occasionally do things resulting in injury to our person.I was using a step stool to climb on a bench to get a rarely used tool from the upper reaches of a peg board when the step stool tipped as weight caused it to upend with my weight on one side.As a consequence a lot of deep surface bruising occurred not with standing the subsequent telling off from she who might care! Have to admit that wonky knees are my cause for concern using ladders etc ,should know better at my age.
