What a hoopla, no thanks. Like Tony I gave up cold turkey and to prevent the biggest temptation gave up alcohol at the same time and did not imbibe for about five years. I still believe that once an addict always an addict and even thirty years on I could still imagine starting again. I really hope you see it through and get off the nicotine thing altogether.

BIG NEWS!!
I am actually going to upgrade my phone! When one embarks on a tech-up, one should keep the momentum going.
One thing leads to another with a puta & peripherals change, and I've spent much of today reorganising my desk, which in turn leads to a change of desk(s) for FFJensen. In the process I found her white 6110 (mine is black) and it has had nowhere near the use that mine has. The slider works better etc.
So there, Mr Archer! Next time you will, in fact, see a new (to me) phone.

Here is an easy way to give up smoking:
(Well it worked for us.)
After a footy match, I was sitting with a rival from the other team having a cigarette. I said to him that I hoped it bloody killed him as I had put in a very rugged 80 minutes with him constantly in my face. He expressed similar aspirations for my future and we sat and puffed away in silence. I made the comment that we were a pair of idiots busting our guts to keep fit but smoking at the same time. He agreed and confided that he had tried to give em away several times, without success.
Now the important thing here was we "hated" each other and neither party would give the other an inch - ever!
Our plan was that we would not smoke again unless we paid the other party for the right to do so.
We agreed on a figure of $10,000, shook on it and had a document drawn up the following day. we both attended and signed, leaving with each taking a copy.
One of the terms of the contract was that we must inform all known acquaintances of our agreement and a copy of the contract was to be displayed in the respective workplaces. Corroborated or photographic evidence would be the determinant.
That was 40 years ago and I still have no desire to gift that piece of s#@*t ten thousand dollars.

Good on for trying something and it will be interesting to see how you go FF.
One thing that all tobacco has, that pure nicotine doesn't, is radioactivity.
Its estimated that about 30% of smokers die from radiation induced diseases so that's a small mercy.
OTOH if you have been a smoker for most of your life the cumulative radiation effects are already engraved on your health score.
I'd be more convinced about the use of e-cigs to give up smoking if they were not invested heavily into by big tobacco companies.
Studies of quit rates amongst cigarette smoker using e-cigs show that the quit rate appears to be slightly better (a few %) than than other methods.
However, what I find disconcerting is the small additional number quitting appears to be more than being made up for by the number of young'uns transiting from ecigs to smoking.
Just yesterday I saw 4 young blokes on the pavement outside a workplace each with an ecig.

Yes, it was actually that thread that spurred me into action at last. I've started blending a couple of juices to reduce the somewhat overpowering menthol - works well and easy enough to do.
Talking to Chris Parks on the phone the other day, and taking a few vapes at the same time. He said I sounded like a lipless leper trying to suck on a straw. Bloody rude bugger.

Cheers Bob.
Maybe it's a bit like Oil companies investing in renewable technologies - they know the end is nigh.
Could be a few reasons for not staying with e-cigs. There's a bit of prep involved, involves changing habits and techniques, and they could also be using juices that aren't giving them the nic hit that they are used to.
Yeah, I get what the nanny state is saying about this, and some longer term figures are the only way to see if eCigs lead more young'uns to smoking. It's too easy to think that the nanny state is knee jerking. Frankly I can't see how a young'un would think that vaping is cool, but then I have a different perspective these days. Certainly it's not like you can leave the thing dangling from your lips whilst looking ultra-cool.
I see a possible solution to the nanny state thing by allowing people to acquire the nic juices under medical supervision. That is, longer term smokers see their doctor, fill out a form or three and then get a licence to purchase nic juices directly from a tobacconist. Scan the customers card at the shop etc etc. Not too cumbersome I don't think.

Brett, if you were working an 8 to 5 job in Sydney and commuting from home would this method of giving up be viable? I ask because it seems to be a lot of mucking around from what you have said.

Yeah, it would Chris. It's actually less mucking around than it sounds.
1. Make sure the units are charged (do it overnight, and take a USB lead to charge if you area heavy user)
2. Squeeze some juice into each one.
3. Carry a bottle of juice along for the ride, if you'll use more than what's in them.
The actual time to start vaping is zero - press the button 5 times to turn it on, and suck away whilst holding the button.
Anyway, as you well know, mucking around is my speciality

I used to smoke roughly 60 a day.
Started having breathing problems.
My doctor at the time said do you smoke. Yes I said.
His reply was " give up or die."
" had one fag when I left his surgery and that was the last I had. went cold turkey.
I still have breathing problems but I'm still here after 25 years.Cheers Fred

Similar to my story though I was only ever a light smoker, 60 a day, STREWTH!!! A radioligist told me he could not see the bottom half of my right lung and advised I give up smoking, I walked out of the xray place and threw a half packet of smokes in the bin outside the door and have not had one since. I found another packet in the pocket of another jacket some time later and threw them away without even thinking about it. It was just the right time and place as I had been considering giving them up for some time and needed a nudge in the right direction.

Waking up at 2am, hot as the hobs of hell, heart in overdrive. was enough for me. Cold turkey was better than chicken, Tested the will power but very beneficial.Aches , pains, coughs, cravings all gone, now 25 years, The smell of second hand smoke is vile, can't stand it yet in my ignorance I inflicted it on others,, Apologies.

I was going to ask if anyone here vaped and found this first...so yay...question answered
Just today I received my first delivery of nicotine infused flavoured juices (after having an empty Aspire unit for a fortnight...taunting me...and straight after buying another pouch of chaff for $59 on my way home) and am hoping that it will help me kick the tar soaked habit of my beloved Bank rollies...damn they're delicious.
I am a HEAVY smoker...like, even in the shower sometimes, and I NEED to quit, if not for me, then for my 5.5yr old girl who I can't play chasey with. (BTW: I NEVER smoke AT ALL when she is with me...she has no idea)
Patches are usually a spectacular fail with me (sweaty bastard, so they need to be secured with 80mt of Elastoplast) so I'm hoping that with the vape I can get out of the tobacco habit, while still accepting the nicotine addiction, then deal with that nasty little bugger on it's own.
I know of others than have had great success quitting the smokes with vaping, and then moving on to nicotine-less liquids just for the flavours. Fingers crossed that I can be one of them too.Last edited by RedShirtGuy; 12th May 2016 at 12:32 AM. Reason: Fixed spelling after having a smoke ;P
