    Default unexplained sweet smells

Has anyone ever had an unexplained sweet smell linger for days? it has happened to me a few times but i don't know why. Currently it has been happening to me for the past 2 days.

I have been working with blackwood for the past 3 days. Mostly just buzzing and thicknessing timber and then doing a lot of sawing which spews out dust throughout the shop. I haven't noticed any issues with blackwood in the past.

Two nights ago I cooked up a batch of pasta which involves 500g of pasta, 500g of tasty cheese, one jar of sauce which claims to have 4 serves of veges in every jar. 4 serves of veges would probably work out to be approx 1/3rd of my yearly vege intake if I exclude tomato sauce and potato. i ate the last of it last night.

Perhaps 3 days ago, I was spraying the bathroom ceiling with a water/bleach mix to kill some mold. It stings the eyes and makes me sneeze so I was obviously breathing it in.

Other than those three things, life is as per the usual. Wake up, shower, chocolate and coke zero for brekky, jam donuts or kfc for lunch, kfc/maccas/fishnchips/pizza for dinner with random snacking of any and all kinds of junk foods throughout the day and evening.

Now clearly I can see many issues with my lifestyle, but ignoring any of that, does anything listed jump out at you as being the possible cause? I googled it and it comes up with stuff like brain tumors, diabetes etc etc. stuff that a doctor will need to diagnose so that isn't gonna happen anytime soon.

My thinking is that there is a chunk of blackwood up my nose and it smells. Or the bleach is more nasty than I give it credit for.

Here is a good page on the subject. Could be nothing, could be something. I would get it checked out. If the worst is the case then early diagnosis is the order of the day.

I have a type of synesthesia where my sense of small can be triggered by somebody using a word associated with that smell. It does not happen often but when it does it is quite strange. It may be a spice or fruit, once it was someone in the car on the radio talking about human waste. That last one was weird to say the least. I don't think it sounds like that though.

For clarity, does anyone else smell it on you?

No idea cava, it is just me, myself and I here and I don't think i'll ask the neighbours to smell me

I do recall seeing an episode of CSI or one of those types of shows, and the dead guy smelt fruity because he had some issue. IIRC it was diabetes and he hadn't taken his meds to balance his system out.

Back in 2010 I smelled a constant smell of BBQ sauce,
see Constant smell of BBQ sauce

It came and went multiple times before I fell though a plate glass door and eventually ended up being diagnosed with Type II diabetes and a DVT
    dark + dog + glass door = . . .

As soon as went on the diabetes meds the BBQ sauce smell disappeared.

My first guess was diabetes, or a methane gas leak

The more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards diabetes. The next time I go to the doctor I'll get her to do whatever it is that they do to check. But for now I guess I may as well lighten up on the sugar intake. and now that it is warmer, I will walk to the shops instead of driving. They are only 800meters away. lunch and dinner will be 3.2km of walking/day

    Cheers fellas

There could be other symptoms associated with diabetes although it's not necessary. see https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/type-2-diabetes
Go easy on the sugar doesn't harm. I think its just a blood test or two to find out.

You need to have a sugar stress test. They feed you a very sweet drink and then take blood every hour or so over a few hours and see how well your system pulls the sugar levels down.

FWIW I went through my 30's-40's as s a BIG carbs eater (bread, pasta, rice etc), mega fruit eater, fair amount of veggies, minimal direct sugar (soft drinks, cakes etc) but lots of beer, moderate fats and lots of protein.
I walked most days somewhere between 2.5 and 8 km.
Not that bad a diet, the main culprit being PORTION SIZE.

I was having sugar stress tests every year for several years and then every 6 monthly for a couple of years and then I stopped taking them.
    Big mistake.
Looking back on it I probably should have gone on meds two years beforehand and ended up doing myself myself permanent kidney damage - and then I find out I only have one!

Get things checked ASAP you could be doing yourself irreparable damage!

Try straight Vinegar for mould, might need redoing after a week or 2 but is less harmful to your health - have a feed of fish and chips whilst wiping down the mould

Vinegar is going to be my next course of action against the mould if the bleach didn't get it. As I understand it, bleach kills some moulds, vinegar kills others. The bleach looks to have done it's job nicely. I went with the bleach first because I reckon the vinegar will stink for ages.

That sugar stress test thing sounds expensive. I was expecting the doc asks me a few questions, takes some blood and call me in a couple of weeks if the results are bad. I'll have to get a quote next time I see a doc about an infection which refuses to fix itself after a week or two of trying.

Vinegar is also good for you internally - a couple of teaspoons in a glass of water every day.

It was done every time by a nurse at the medical practice and they just bulk billed me for it all.
You need to be ahead of the curve and pick it up BEFORE it becomes a problem because you might be able to avoid it by modifying you diet and exercise.
It is MUCH harder to get rid of it once you have it.

    Kuffy,

I'd be down at the doctor's very quickly. If you have a problem it's much better to get help soon. If you don't have a problem, better to know and you can stop worrying.

The body is an immensely complex thing, so I wouldn't be self-diagnosing. Just be aware that delaying seeing a medical professional may mean you make the problem worse.

With the very best intention I suggest you take Mr Nike's advice and Just Do It.
