Every aspect of it looks like common old Sally Wattle to me (Acacia salicina). Common but yummy! I've converted a lot of the blokes up here to looking at it in a different light - they used to look at it as more of a nuisance than anything else!

    Acacia glaucocarpa wrong bark
    Acacia granitica
    Acacia hispidula
Acacia holosericea too small from my experience
Acacia hubbardiana this is small shrub

    Acacia ulicifolia too small
    Acacia uncifolia
    Acacia venulosa too small
    Acacia viscidula
Maybe this trims the list a bit. I would have a bet on A. aulacocarpa/disparrima or A.melanoxylon especially for the bark shown in the sample. Timber grain looks more like one of the faster growing 'coastal forest' wattles.

May well be Brown Salwood(Aulacocarpa) as you suggested...definately not Melanoxylon,as the timber is heavier and firmer to mill than Blackwood.Highlights what a diverse and rich Genus we are blessed with...thanks for all the input folks...here's a pic of some figured Melanoxylon from my area...MM
