Advice needed - Oregon
A neighbour is demolishing an old carport from the 1970s and the roof trusses are oregon (he says) about 7000 x 300 x 40 I'd guess x 7 lengths. All straight, denailed and in good nick. They're destined for a timber salvage yard but I was thinking of making an offer. Couple of questions:
- What's a fair price do you think? (i.e. how much would I expect to pay retail by the time it gets to the salvage yard?)
- Will this wood be OK for stuff like outdoor furniture (tables, benches etc) and a woodworking bench?
Obviously I know next to nothing about wood, so any advice is appreciated.

I'd offer him $50 and it would be fine for a bench or furniture that is undercover!

Not sure about a price.
Oregon is fine for sheltered areas but hopeless for outdoor items that are exposed to the weather. It has a tendency to rot.
It makes great workbenches, and if the timber is very close grained - ie its growth rings are very close together, it makes lovely furniture.
Be careful as it can be a bit splintery.
Cheers

Good old oregon with growth rings as described by Scribbly is worth 20 - 40 dollars p/lm if it is 300 x 50mm so he may not be too receptive to an offer below $500 dollars considering they are in useable truss form which would make the timber more expensive. We sold 4 oregon trusses which span 5.5mtrs recently for $800 and the guy thought it was a bargain . Salvage yards won't offer him much though so start low and you never know.

a 300mm x 40mm board in oregan from "the big red shed" where my mate works would be mighty expencive.
i would think around $60/lm minimum.
i dotn know what they pay but it would be a good price also it its been denailed ready to go.

It would depend on where it came from. If it's Canadian or American oregon, it will have much tighter grain than we get here and is stronger - more valuable. I think 12 x 4 would be very valuable especially at those lengths. Not sure about 40mm stock... Shame to cut it....

A case of beer should do. Sometimes it is not just about money. You get your free timber and he gets rid of his without paying anyone.
Oregon isn't a great timber. If you are into rustic stuff then it isn't too bad.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

I'm not a great woodworker so it's probably best that I do some "rustic" stuff on wood that's equally sub-par

You know what they say, if you can't make it perfect make it rustic.

OK, have more info:
They want $22 / lm
6500 x 300 x 50 Australian Oregon x 9 straight, denailed boards
Given what some have said above, that sounds like a fair price?

Hmm...
That is around $3 a superfoot. (1in X 1ft X 1ft)
Is your neighbour a businessman?
If you really want them and they are in good condition, straight, flat and denailed then its probably not that bad. Still a lot of people would just be happy to have them removed for free.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

Sorry, I probably wasn't clear. I'm dealing not with my neighbour but with the people who are doing the demolition work, and they actually own the salvage yard as well, so they know how much they can get for the wood retail. My neighbour got a discounted rate for the demotion work with the undertsnading that the demolition people would own anything salvagable.
