Thread: Advice on sourcing timber for house build in Kuranda.

There are five fixed sawmills and four reputable timber yards inside a 1 1/2 hr drive of Kuranda. (In the interest of disclosure I run one of those mills and supply into two of those timber yards, but the other guys cut/sell a good board too). Parkside and DTM (qlds two largest sawmilling operations) also have yards in Cairns.

Cypress... If you really had your heart set on it... Might be cheaper ex Brisbane, not a lot of cypress milled up here.
For the rest you'd have to define "good price". What's a good price for F17H3 or better ex Brisbane, plus freight? If you've got an idea of sizes and volumes PM me and Ill give you some contact details to get quotes.

which ever way you go the one thing I'd advise you to remember is that this ain't Brisbane... Cyclones are a fact of life. No matter what the engineer says or the plan shows-specify F14 batten as a minimum. Pine is fine for a lot of things but holding your roof down in a 200 kph sea breeze ain't one of them. It's only overkill until the day you need it.

Thanks John.G you will definitely get a visit from two semi retired owner builders to check out your wood. We are planning on a Level C2 steel frame and subfloor, with us doing all the cladding/plastering/fitting out/roughing in ect with a sparky and plumber to make the final connections legal. F14 or F14+ battens sound like a prudent idea.As we got smashed by both cat 2 Supercell storms and got 5 metres of water over the cement downstairs in 2011 we are long past thinking it won't happen to us.

I know a tree loper in Kuranda who has many containers of milled timbers, a very large range as it's all timber he been paid to trim or take out, if you were set on having all one type then he probably wouldn't be able to help though
