Default Where to find small amounts of sandalwood/false sandalwood near Melbourne?

Sorry if I sound completely ignorant because I am totally new to this. My mother has taken up a great interest in sandalwood after a trip to India, she thought she couldn't bring pieces of wood back because of quarantine issues so she didn't try. But now I am wondering if sandalwood (or other scented wood) pieces or chips can be found here?

Some are protected, but yes they are available, especially from collectors. How much are you after?

It is highly regulated, especially here in WA.

You have to win a tender from the government to harvest it and big fines for illegal harvesting.

The irony is on the black market Sandalwood is much more lucrative than selling it legit.

Most of it goes offshore for processing into incense sticks or oils.

    Cheers

She would love a sandalwood log for decoration (what size do they usually come in?), and 1 kg of chips for burning.

It does vary, the logs I have are only ~150-200mm, but I doubt she would be willing to pay the price for a whole log, especially just for decoration. I'd suggest trying to find another species, many can look good. Has she considered scented Rosewood, certainly as a log can look fantastic.

I assume for the smell. Sorry, but you are probably not going to get any collectors here offering up some of this rare timber, just to burn . Better to use a potpourri bowl with unscented chips/shaving (you can buy by the bag at some markets) then scent them with the oil. Or just keep using incense.

False Sandalwood (eremophila mitchellii) is a plentiful pest out here - it can take over a paddock if let go! Better still, it has and much stronger aroma that lasts for years while the Northern Australian Sandalwood (santalum lanceolatum) loses it's aroma very quickly after working it .. . . . . . . . . . but is beautiful to work with

Just thought I'd rub that in

There is a place in Perth, where we can buy Sandalwood for about $55.00 per Kilo, they export most of their stock, but we ( the lucky ones ) can get some, and yes it is very regulated

Is there any information of this place? Is it possible to get them to ship a kilo to Melbourne?

Don't know if anyone in Oz sells it at all, nor do I know if it would fool your MIL as the aroma is a bit different - it's also known as Buddah as it was grubbed out and sold to Asia for incense production in the depression years

Im guessing that even if we knew where sandlewood was to be found we (especially myself) would not tell you.
Reason: We dont know if you are genuine or a poacher looking for new areas to bulldoze. Yes thats right, the poachers bulldoze the whole tree and load it onto a truck.
I for one; by virtue of my remote job know of several areas here in WA where sandlewood is found, but I aint saying.

This guy won't be able to assit you .... Charges, unauthorised harvesting of sandalwood, Richmond | QPS News Pays to know where your timber comes from.

There used to be quite a bit of sandalwood harvesting & processing around Hughenden in the 1990's but I'm not sure if it is still going on.

Eh, I am not looking for locations of live trees, I am just trying to find someone to sell me a small log or chips.
