    Default Ancient Kauri

Its amazing what they dig out of the ground up north.
To appreciate the size of some of the logs you really need to visit one of the extraction sites. The logs are massive. They almost dwarf the exxcavator machines you see in the photo(s)

However I was trawling on the net and look what I found.

    Ancient Kauri

Check out the harps they made from this wood, as well as all the other info.

As a footnote, I make easels for local artists and art societies from recycled Kauri. A lot of the wood I am using was milled over a century ago and is still as good as the day it was milled.

My new workbench will be made from it as well.

And if you plan a visit to NZ anytime its worth heading up north to this place

There is some really cool stuff here (if somewhat expensive).

That place is worth visiting just to see the staircase...
It's a spiral staicase carved on the INSIDE of a solid 40,000 year old kauri log. You actually walk up the inside.

My wife and I stayed at a BB just on the edge of the Waipoua forest run by a farming couple,he gave me some swamp Kauri to take home to turn.
He reckoned that it was pretty ancient timber and no telling how long it had been submerged in mud and water on his property when they found it when reclaiming land by draining the swamp.

Nice part of NZ up there in Northland where the now dwindled kauri forests are.

    Cheers

Everyone has a photographic memory, some just don't have film.
