The marks are produced by a roller system. years ago, When Koppers were treating sleepers and posts with creasote, they had a sintering roller system that actually put cuts into the surface of the timber to allow better penetration of the creasote into the wood. This sintering is what you are looking at.
Is creasote toxic do I need to be extra careful when cutting it?

Looks like wood creosote was used as a medicine but other forms of creosote can cause cancer, I'll err on the side of caution I think.

The anonymous donor came forward over the weekend and although they do not know what timber it is they do know what it was.

It wasn't a fence post it is part of an old cross arm from a power pole and he confirmed that creosote is used to treat them.

He also said he can get me another two that are about 2m long so they could do nicely as the legs for my workbench.
