Anyone who knows me knows I scrounge timber and I have said to many people if you come across any timber let me know or drop it off at my place. Came home yesterday and someone had left what looks like a fence post outside the house. I used my electric handplaner to get beneath the grey and this is what I found, anyone know what it is?

    I think you're right. It's a fence post.

I'd go with spotted gum. I am sitting in front of my coffee tablw which has legs from fenceposts and it is near identical.

    Cheers,

    Tom

I did get a 10mm splinter in my thumb whilst handling it.

The spots seem to be too uniform to be natural I was thinking maybe the staple like holes were made as part of a treatment process?

That's the corner where it's still a bit grey, think top and side and it might make sense.

How about weathered spotted gum and the little peck marks are from the feed rollers when it was originally milled ? Very nice character from the weathering.

    G'day.
It does seem to be Spotted Gum.
The marks are produced by a roller system. years ago, When Koppers were treating sleepers and posts with creasote, they had a sintering roller system that actually put cuts into the surface of the timber to allow better penetration of the creasote into the wood. This sintering is what you are looking at.
    Hooroo.
