Beautiful Timber - How Do You Select?
I feel a little foolish posing this question, but the spectacular timber in this post http://tinyurl.com/r2o4v causes me to do so.
How do you go about finding and selecting timber with interesting figuring? Do you have the supplier keep his eyes open for this stuff to let you know when it's available? Does it cost more than plainer timber of the same species?
I read where some woodworkers take a knife along to the supplier to cut back the surface then wipe it with water to see the grain, but this seems a very tedious process and one that is not likely to be welcomed by most timber suppliers.
Being Melbourne based, I would particularly appreciate comments from local woodworkers, but any comments will be helpful.
