    Default Blackwood - Tasmanian/Victorian ??

    Hi all
I'm looking to build a bed frame for our 2 year old, though Tasmanian Blackwood looks like a good choice.... is Victorian Blackwood the same thing?? If not, how is it different??
    cheers

Australia has never named wood, It is named to be like some species overseas Tassy oak for example is not Oak its eucalypt that mills like oak. So Blackwood is a type of eucalypt as far as I know that turns out like an ash. Yes I maty be incorrect, its all so confusing, but for a bed frame cripes any descent wood will do..

Sure.... I am aware that the term Tasmanian Oak is a misnomer.

From my research I see that 'Australian blackwood' - Acacia melanoxylon- is also called 'Tasmanian Blackwood' .... is Victorian Blackwood the same thing??

AFAIK it's the same species, however all the "pretty" timber I've seen has come from the Isle. The mainland stuff seems to be blander and doesn't have quite as distinct a grain pattern.

This is either because of different growing conditions or because I haven't been observant enough.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    What he said.
Its the same species however IMO Tassie blackwood kicks ass all over the north island version & the blackwood from up Smithton way in the north of Tassie is also IMO the best of the best. Blackwood comes in many colour variations so keep an eye on colour matching in the bed.
