    Default Borer Identification

    Hi all,

    I'm building a workbench and decided to use some F27 Blackbutt for the base / stretchers etc. I spent a bit of time picking the best bits ... looking for straight pieces and without cracks. What I didn't notice at the time was two of the lengths had borer holes.

    I'm now at the point of wondering if I should throw these bits out of the garage before they get into anything else ... or are they just 'old' holes and not actually a problem (the appearance won't worry me for a bench).

    There is heaps of brilliant information on this site ... but I can't seem to find anything like this.

    I'd say they are old, keep an eye on them just in case, if you see any little mounds of sawdust appearing means they are still there, if it's just a few holes tip a bit of thinners/acetone/metho/turps/etc... their not real keen on that.

    Lyctus borer.

    Wood borer infestations: detection and treatment | CSIRO

    Pretty common believe it or not (in some timbers), usually timber that's been 'down' (salvaged from the forest floor after starting the rot process from staying wet on the forest floor).

    Not the end of the earth, epoxy mixed with sawdust from the same wood - blow the holes with compressed air - fill and sand flat.

    Considered a "feature" by some.
