Where to buy to timber (Melbourne)
Hi,
I'm still practicing (butchering) wood turning so looking for inexpensive suitable timber.
I've got some blackwood and gum drying in the shed but it's a long way off.
I know I can go to Pops shed/Carbatec and buy exotic stuff but as it's for practise I want to keep it cheap. Is there anything at Bunnings etc which is suitable?
I want to have a crack at a laminated rolling pin. Bunnings have DAR tassie oak which I assume would be suitable but is there anything else I can contrast it with? Cedar? Pine?
stupid thing won't let me link an image but something like this:

Tassie Oak and Merbau make a great combo, have made a few Lazy Susans with that combo.

Ah!
Merbau... great idea.
I was scouring bunnings website for ideas but didn't see it.
I'm going to head down on the weekend but thought someone would have some ideas first.
cheers

I started out with pine it's cheap
And I personally found it ok to turn with.
Building sites have heaps as scrap.
Cheers Matt

Cheers all,
I've got a bit of pine lying around.
I grabbed some spotted gum and tassie oak from the big green shed to have a bit of a play around with.
I swung into Mathews Timber in Knox to see what they have too. They've got a great range but it will have to wait until I have a bit more cash and a thicknesser I reckon.

I'm up in Belgrave,
I've laminated a few strips of the spotted gum and tas oak today. they are just shy of 600 long and 65mm wide. I'll see how I go turning them into a rolling pin tomorrow and might do another glue up for another one.
I'm also trying to make a laminated chopping board but without a thicknesser I don't think it's going to be practical.
Again, once I get a thicknesser I'll be able to make better use of scrap offcuts and head back to Mathews timber for some better timber (it seemed mostly rough sawn when I looked today)

I might be ab help out with some wood for you. Rolling pin dimensions you gave I can get in "Vic' Ash", Spotty gum mainly in offcuts under 400mm x 290mm wide x 45mm thick, similar in American Oak and Vic Ash and occasionally other species. D you travel to E/SE of Melbourne CBD much?

Thanks Springwater,
I don't get too close to the CBD much these days.
After glueing up the laminate blank I got almost to completion and got a catch turning one of the balls on the end of the pin and snapped it . I managed to recover it best as possible but back to practicing beads and coves I think!
I'll throw some pine on the lathe and spend a few hours with the spindle gouge I think!
