    Default Buying a nail detector

Can anyone please advise on the latest thinking for the best detector of nails in timber, other than a jointer or thicknesser or planer ?

i am looking for something that is reasonably priced, but one that is very effective
    regards,

    Dengy

That's the one that we have at our Day Centre Shed, fantastic. It will keep some of the clients busy for half an hour or more, looking for nails and staples that aren't there, 35 mm timber sitting on the concrete floor. It's picking up the reinforcing mesh in the concrete.
Nails etc. don't do a saw blade much good either.

I bought a cheapy one something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Portable-...item2a38654ef5 years ago and have been more than happy with it.

That one looks the same as mine and if so will probably have a 9v plug so you can use it with a suitable power pack, since if you use it as irregularly as me you will find the 9v battery is always dead.

Looks like it was 6 years ago. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/heres-cheap-metal-detector-75541
It has no problems finding half a panel pin in old Ironbark.

    Default metal detection

I have a hanson magnetic stud finder which fits easily in my pocket and doesnt use batteries - $25 dollars or so delivered from a seller on ebay

2 rare earth magnets which stop it dead if gently pushed along a surface

I also bought the carbatec unit recently . I de-nailed a heap of timber today so plan to put it to the test tomorrow or the next day. I will put a heap through the thicknesser tomorrow or the next day and see what happens!

I work with a lot of recycled timber. Carbatec one works fine.

I too have the carbatec one, finds the steel screws in my leg every time.

I can be sometimes fooled by hard knots in hardwood. I once missed a nail because of a false positive on a hard knot.
    I would recommend it.

Hi everyone, I purchased the Carbatec metal detector, but found it would not detect an ordinary paper staple lying on the surface of a board, nor a 6mm length of the staple that I dropped down a termite hole in the board, with 1mm left protruding above the board surface. I even touched the staple with the wand, no joy there either. Checked the staple with a magnet, and it was very quickly grabbed.

Has anyone ever had problems with this metal detector not performing properly?
    regards,

    Dengy

Hi Crowie, I eventually found it needed to have the sensitivity adjusted to pick up these items. The battery was OK
