cedar
I have been given some timber off cuts of a timber called Surian cedar. would like some info on this timber,suitability for turning etc. Thankyou.

Surian Cedar is most likely to be cedrus labani . common name Cedar of Lebanon.
There are few trees of this species growing in this country.
The local grown trees very seldom come onto the market.
If that is Cedar of Lebanon , uses will be found under that listing.

I don't think it's cedar of Lebanon, it comes from Malaysia. It's similar to Aust. Red cedar to work with but doesn't have the same rich red colour. Used a fair bit of it on a boat refit. Not being a turner I can't comment on its suitability or otherwise for turning, but I assume that it's prob. similar to Aust. red cedar. I know you need real sharp chisels to pare with.
