    Default Claret Ash Properties

    Hi All,

Looking for the properties of Claret Ash, specifically Janka hardness and weight.

I am sure I have seen it before, but can't find it now.

It's for a cutting board, and I am trying to match the hardness (as much as possible) with other timbers that I will use.

    Thanks all.

    George

    Default Claret Ash Properties

I have a fair stash of it after milling a tree a few years back, I use it to make necks for ukuleles and guitars. I would say it is similar to tassie Oak/vic Ash in hardness or a bit softer (not by much) slightly more porous in the end grain. I don’t think you will find much information on it due to being an South Australian anomaly, it didn’t really take off as a furniture grade timber, although I love the stuff.
This link is all I could find on the net http://woodgroupsa.org.au/wSAknowledge/ashes.pdf

here's a bit more from Wikipedia
The Claret ash or Raywood ash is a cultivar of ash tree, a seedling variant of the Caucasian ash (Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa). The original seedling was discovered near a group of assorted ash trees in Sewell's nursery in the Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia about 1910, and later grown at the nearby property Raywood (former home of the Downer family). The tree was introduced to Britain in 1928 and to North America in 1956, although it did not become widely available there until 1979.

a quick glance through the Wood database suggests many of the Ashes have similar Janka hardness, e.g.
    white ash 1,320 lbf (5,870 N
    Blue Ash 1,290 lbf (5,740 N)
    Green ash 1,200 lbf (5,340 N)
    European ash 1,480 lbf (6,580 N)
    regards from Alberta, Canada
