Cracked sassafras
Hi guys.
Wonder if anyone can help me with what just happened. I bought a dry block of black heart Sassafras from Tasmania and it arrived to me in qld today. When I opened it it looked fine but had that cold kinda wet feeling, I took it out to the shed and sat it on sticks, within an hour it had big cracks all through it. Does anyone know why this happened.
Cheers

Bummer. The cold part sounds like it wasnt dry to me. Were the ends sealed? Blackheart can be prone to cracking when drying and needs to be end sealed and wrapped in newspaper. Have you got a moisture meter or access to one?
Regards. Jason.

Agree with Jason,
It may have been a green log rather than "dried"
Plus all logs for drying should be end sealed as soon as possible after cutting.
The block might still be ok, depending on the intended purpose of the block as it might just be surface checking.
