    Default Dealing with surface cracks

I have some timber which is otherwise good but has lots of "surface" cracks which are very fine, say .25 of a mm wide, and up to 150 mm long, but which can be quite deep, say 5-10 mm. Any suggestions about how to deal with them would be appreciated. The timber is 50 mm thick so I can plane the surface but I don't want to loose 5 or 10 mm.

What kind of timber, and what are you going to use it for?

I guess the only option you have is to fill the crack, probably with a resin filler if you don't want to trim it down. I would have thought even if you had to lose 10 mil off the timber that 40mm would still be ample thick enough for a book case.

2 ways that you can deal with them,

1- use them as they are and carry on as normal, you won't get rid of them all.

2- try to source some boards without surface checks.

To get boards without any defects in it is like trying to win the lottery. Think about where they will show up once the project is finished. Put the worst ones where they will get covered by books or keep the best sides facing up or out with the worst facing down or in depending on where it is.

Just about anything I've made with timber has had the timber moved and flipped till I can get the best effect out of what I have to play with, but you'll still get some that you just can't do anything about.
    Cheers

    Talking Thinking to Much

    My thinking is:
No matter how small a layer one takes off,
    one will never gain strength.

Leave them, and perhaps FILL and Polish
